Mitch McConnell is trying to shut down the rumor mill with another carefully staged hospital photo — but the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican still has not been medically cleared to return to work.

The longtime senator released a new image Monday showing him propped up in bed and smiling beside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, as questions continue to swirl over his extended absence from Washington following a serious fall at his home on June 14. McConnell said he is “still working hard” and hopes to resume his full Senate schedule and return to Kentucky once doctors give him the green light.

“As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon,” McConnell said in the update.

But the new photo did not come with a return date. Instead, it confirmed what critics have been demanding more clarity on for weeks: McConnell remains in a rehabilitation facility and is undergoing what his office described as intense physical therapy.

The Office of the Attending Physician said McConnell is receiving daily medical visits and “multiple sessions a day” of rehabilitation aimed at rebuilding strength and lowering the risk of future falls. Doctors also said McConnell’s childhood polio continues to play a major role in his mobility issues, and that he is “not yet medically cleared” to leave rehab and return to the office.

The update comes after weeks of speculation, conspiracy theories and mounting public pressure over McConnell’s condition. The senator was reportedly found unconscious after the June fall, and his office initially released only limited information about his health. That silence triggered wild online rumors that McConnell was “brain dead” or even dead — claims that remain unverified and unsupported by any official medical statement.

Former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene helped fuel the frenzy when she told TMZ the Republican Party was staying quiet while one of its most powerful senators was “basically laying in a hospital like a vegetable.” Former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Rinna also jumped into the speculation, claiming McConnell was “dead” and comparing the situation to Weekend at Bernie’s.

McConnell’s team has pushed back by releasing photos and written updates, but the lack of video has only deepened skepticism among critics who want to see the senator speaking for himself. After McConnell released his first post-hospitalization photo on July 12, some online users questioned whether the image had been generated or altered by AI — another sign of how much distrust has built around the situation.

In that earlier update, McConnell said he had not suffered a broken bone, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumor or brain bleed. He also said doctors had treated him for a mild case of pneumonia.

The new update makes clear that McConnell is alive, alert and still involved in some Senate-related work — but it also underscores the central question Democrats and even some Republicans have been circling for weeks: whether one of the most powerful figures in modern conservative politics is physically capable of finishing out his term.

McConnell, who is not seeking reelection, has said he intends to serve until his term ends in January 2027. But his prolonged absence is already having political consequences. He is expected to miss Kentucky’s Fancy Farm Picnic, a major political tradition he has attended for decades, because doctors have not cleared him to leave rehab.

For a senator who spent years shaping the federal courts, blocking Democratic priorities and helping define the modern Republican Party, the carefully worded health updates are doing only so much. The photo may quiet the most extreme rumors — but it will not end the pressure for more transparency from an elected official still holding one of Kentucky’s two seats in the U.S. Senate.
