Cheryl Fergison, once a beloved fixture in British living rooms, opens up about a life spiraling from stardom to struggle, revealing tearfully her visits to a food bank and her dreams of a comeback.

In the height of her “EastEnders” days, Cheryl Fergison didn’t think twice about splurging. Playing the warm-hearted but tragic Heather Trott from 2007 to 2012, Fergison was adored by millions. But today, life for the actress, now 60, has taken a sobering turn. “I was sitting there in tears,” she admits, recalling the shame she felt when a staff member from Citizens Advice escorted her to a food bank. “I thought, ‘How did I end up here?’”

In recent years, Cheryl has battled more than just financial strain. In 2015, she was diagnosed with womb cancer, a grim diagnosis that she says “shook everything.” The treatment that followed wasn’t just physically taxing; it also took a toll on her mental health. “I’d be in the shower scalding myself over and over, thinking I could wash away the cancer,” she shared, revealing a disturbing compulsion to rid her body of illness. Her hysterectomy threw her into early menopause, sparking a spiral of physical and emotional struggles, self-harm, and ultimately, deep debt.

By this February, Fergison found herself broke, reeling from debt and no longer able to afford groceries. “It’s something you never think will happen to you,” she said, her voice reflecting years of pent-up pain. Cheryl, who lives near Blackpool, described the food bank visit as both humbling and empowering. “They were like angels, every one of them,” she shared. “They didn’t care who I was. They just cared about me as a person in need. That’s a moment I’ll carry forever.”

A Struggle Shared by Many

The shock of seeing a former TV star on the brink has sparked widespread public sympathy. “People see me at Lidl and go, ‘What are you doing here?’” Cheryl laughs, a little bitterly. “I’m living like everyone else now.” For fans, the image of a once-successful actress turned food bank visitor is a stark reminder of the financial precarity many Britons face, even those who once seemed to “have it all.”

Cheryl has tried to make ends meet by selling old “EastEnders” scripts and performing at a local Chinese restaurant. “If I can earn enough to put food on my own table, that’s a success,” she said, determined to stay out of the food bank.

A Friend to Lean On

As Cheryl’s life unraveled, a few of her former castmates stepped up. She describes her bond with Steve McFadden, who plays Phil Mitchell, as a lifeline. “Steve has always been a rock. He’s misunderstood, but he’s one of my favorite people,” Cheryl says. She also found comfort in her memories of the late Barbara Windsor, who portrayed Peggy Mitchell. “Barbara was a gem. When I was struggling, she and her husband, Scott, even wrote cheques to help me keep my home. She would say, ‘People don’t need to know what’s going on in your life. Be kind to them – they’re here because they love you.’ That was Barbara’s spirit.”

Barbara’s advice helped Cheryl push through some of her darkest days. “I’d be smiling for fans, but behind the scenes, I was hurting so badly. Still, I held on to Barbara’s words.”

Determined for a Comeback

Fergison isn’t letting her hardships steal her spirit. With a renewed sense of purpose, she’s set to play the Fairy Godmother in a local Christmas pantomime. And she has more dreams: “I’d love to be back on TV, maybe in another soap. Or even in ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’ Bring it on.”

Through her struggles, Cheryl has found resilience. Her message to others facing hardship is straightforward: “Don’t ever feel ashamed. We all need help sometimes.” With her story, she’s hoping to break the stigma around food banks and show that strength often comes from embracing vulnerability.

As Cheryl Fergison moves forward, she does so with a glimmer of hope – and the undying loyalty of fans who still see her as Heather Trott, a survivor in every sense of the word.
