Legendary actor Dick Van Dyke, at nearly 99 years old, isn’t holding back on his views about Donald Trump’s potential second term as president.
In a candid moment with paparazzi, the “Mary Poppins” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” star dismissed the idea that a Trump presidency would “Make America Great Again.” Instead, he delivered a wry response: “Fortunately, I won’t be around to experience the four years.”
This quip follows Van Dyke’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris just days before the election, marking a rare but clear step into political waters. The actor appeared on social media, urging Americans to “VOTE!” and lending his voice to the Harris campaign—a choice that’s sparked plenty of conversation among his fans and critics alike.
In a separate video obtained by the Daily Mail, Van Dyke expressed more about his hopes—and disappointments—for America. When a bystander asked if he thought the future looked bright, he replied, “I hope you’re right,” hinting at his doubts about the country’s current path.
But Van Dyke wasn’t just sharing quips and endorsements. He also recited a powerful passage from Rod Serling’s “A Most Non-Political Speech,” a piece he first read publicly in 1964 during a time of civil rights upheaval. Serling’s words condemning hatred, prejudice, and jealousy rang out in Van Dyke’s gravelly voice: “They’re diseases…cancers of the soul,” he recited. “And because they have been and because they are, is it necessary that they shall be? I think not.”
Van Dyke’s choice to echo sentiments from the ’60s civil rights era reminds many of his long commitment to equality, dignity, and social justice—values he has spoken for throughout his career. Reflecting on this era, he admitted, “A lot’s happened…not as much as Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of, but it’s a start.”
This speech is no stranger to Van Dyke’s repertoire. He first read it over 50 years ago during a Religious Witness for Human Dignity event, held not long after King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. In the decades since, Van Dyke has stayed vocal on issues of justice, bringing these values into both his art and activism.
It’s worth noting, too, that Van Dyke has racked up more than just on-screen accolades this year. Earlier, he became the oldest-ever Daytime Emmy winner for his guest role on “Days of Our Lives.” He humbly described himself as “lazy” despite his 60-year career—a career that continues to break barriers.
As for Trump, Van Dyke made it clear he won’t be sticking around to see how a second term would play out. But even at nearly a century old, his message to America is louder than ever: stand up, keep faith, and reject the “cancers of the soul” that divide us.
