In a shocking incident early Sunday morning near the Glilot military base north of Tel Aviv, one person was killed and dozens were injured after a large truck rammed into a bus at a busy bus stop.
Israeli emergency services and police described a chaotic scene as civilians on-site reportedly shot at the truck driver, “neutralizing” him to prevent further harm.
Israel’s police spokesperson revealed that the truck’s impact hit both the bus and several passengers. In the aftermath, Israel’s emergency services, Magen David Adom (MDA), declared it a “mass casualty event.” MDA spokesperson Ronit Glaser shared that ambulances, motorcycles, first responders, paramedics, and EMTs rushed to the scene, treating and evacuating 35 people.
Six sustained severe injuries, while others faced moderate to minor wounds. Nearby hospitals, including Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, worked rapidly to accommodate the influx of patients, tragically confirming the death of a 72-year-old man.
The bus passengers who survived were in shock. One passenger narrated the terrifying moments right after the impact, recounting, “We managed to escape. There are some of our people trapped, senior citizens trapped.” Video footage shows frantic rescue efforts as several people were visibly pinned beneath the truck.
While investigations are underway, Israeli police have yet to announce whether they suspect terrorism or a tragic accident. However, the incident drew praise from Hamas, the militant group, which framed it as a “natural response” to Israel’s activities in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem.
This tragic incident occurred against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the region, and police have heightened security across the area. In a related, possibly retaliatory event in the West Bank, a separate incident later on Sunday involved an individual who, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), attempted a vehicular and knife attack on IDF soldiers. The assailant, who reportedly sped toward soldiers conducting counterterrorism operations in the village of Hizma, was shot and killed after pulling a knife from his vehicle.
As Israeli forces and emergency responders grapple with the aftermath of these incidents, the region remains on high alert, with concerns that tensions could further flare in the coming days.
