Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was rushed to the hospital Sunday morning, adding fresh concern around the 84-year-old Republican’s health as he nears the end of a decades-long career in Washington.
“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” his office said in a brief statement.
McConnell’s team did not reveal what led to the hospitalization, leaving unanswered questions about the condition of one of the most powerful Republican figures of the modern era.
The Daily Beast reported that it has reached out to McConnell’s office for additional comment.
The hospitalization comes after a string of health scares and public moments that have fueled concern about McConnell’s fitness in recent years. He was hospitalized last year with flu-like symptoms and has repeatedly appeared frail while carrying out his Senate duties.
In October, McConnell stumbled while answering questions about ICE, another moment that drew attention to the physical toll of his long career in public office.
McConnell, who is set to retire when his term ends this year, leaves behind a towering and controversial legacy. He is the longest-serving Senate party leader in American history, with a career spanning four decades and shaping everything from Supreme Court battles to the Republican Party’s hard-right turn.
But in his final stretch in office, McConnell has also broken sharply with Donald Trump, 80, criticizing the president and members of his administration over foreign policy.
He also voted against Trump’s pick of Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, a rare and striking rebuke from a Republican elder statesman who spent years helping build the conservative power structure Trump later seized.
McConnell’s hospitalization now adds another layer of uncertainty around the GOP at a time when the party remains deeply divided between old-guard Republicans and Trump’s loyalists.
