In a shocking event early Tuesday, a ten-story hotel in Argentina’s coastal city of Villa Gesell, Buenos Aires Province, collapsed, leaving rescue teams racing against the clock to save people feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The building, once the renowned Dubrovnik Hotel, had reportedly been under unauthorized construction—a factor that local officials are saying could have contributed to the tragedy.
Local authorities report that between seven and nine individuals, including workers linked to a construction project allegedly lacking municipal permits, were believed to be in the building when it collapsed.
Officials had already halted construction work at the site back in August. “We had detected and stopped unauthorized work at the Dubrovnik,” Villa Gesell’s Security Minister Javier Alonso told the press, adding that “this construction did not follow municipal requirements.”
Despite ongoing rescue efforts, authorities have confirmed one fatality: an 80-year-old man, found beneath the debris. An elderly woman, however, was pulled from the rubble alive—a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation.
More than 300 firefighters, police officers, and emergency responders have been at the scene since dawn. Villa Gesell’s mayor, Gustavo Barrera, stated that the situation remains critical, with an adjacent building at risk of collapse. “The rescue effort has already gone on for over eight hours, and we are facing further structural threats,” Barrera warned.
According to Argentina’s Infobae, a criminal investigation is underway. Four people have already been detained in connection with the incident, and charges are expected. “The courts have ordered arrests as we investigate the full cause of this collapse,” Alonso said.
This tragic collapse has rocked the Villa Gesell community and raised serious questions about the enforcement of safety regulations in Argentina’s construction industry.
