Chinese hackers have reportedly infiltrated the networks of U.S. telecommunications firms, using this access to target the mobile devices of high-profile political figures, including former President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance. Individuals familiar with the situation indicated that the hackers also sought information from associates of Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.

The extent of the hackers’ access remains uncertain. Investigators believe these individuals may be linked to China’s intelligence services, raising significant concerns about national security. “The scale of the breach is alarming,” noted a source involved in the investigation.

In recent weeks, the investigation has uncovered a broader scope of the attacks. It is now believed that the hackers gained access to critical U.S. telecommunications infrastructure, potentially compromising dozens of companies and individuals. “This is not just about a few targets; it’s extensive,” an insider stated.

Since being detected last month, the hackers have demonstrated increasingly aggressive tactics. They have attempted to re-enter systems even after being removed, which has raised alarms among federal and private-sector investigators. “They’re taunting us,” one respondent commented, questioning the implications of the hackers’ boldness. The source emphasized that the ongoing activities mark a “new frontier” in how China conducts cyber operations against the U.S.

Earlier this month, investigators discovered that the hackers, identified as Salt Typhoon, made an unsuccessful attempt to access the account of a Wall Street Journal journalist covering the breaches. Microsoft informed the journalist about the attempted breach, highlighting the hackers’ focus on information that could be used for espionage.

Concerns are heightened as these cyber activities coincide with the upcoming presidential election. Experts warn that the days leading up to the election are particularly vulnerable to foreign interference. “The timing raises questions about the potential for more significant disruptions,” stated a cybersecurity analyst.

The Trump campaign has responded to the news but did not address the specific targeting of Trump and Vance. Instead, they criticized the Biden administration’s handling of foreign adversaries. “This administration has shown weakness,” a spokesperson stated.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that it is investigating unauthorized access to telecommunications infrastructure by Chinese actors, marking the U.S. government’s first formal acknowledgment of this extensive breach. The FBI’s statement highlights the seriousness of the situation and its potential implications for national security.

In response to the breaches, senior officials in the Biden administration are working to assess the full impact of the cyberattacks. Reports indicate that the hackers targeted systems involved in surveillance wiretaps, which could allow them to monitor U.S. law enforcement activities.

Given the political implications, the phones of key politicians like Trump and Vance could contain sensitive information, including texts and call records. Such data could provide insights into potential future administrations.

Separately, the targeting of journalists by state-sponsored hackers is unusual and suggests a strategy of intimidation. Former intelligence officials expressed concern over this direct approach, noting its rarity.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington denied any involvement in the alleged breaches. “China is not responsible for these claims,” the spokesperson stated.

The White House has recently convened confidential meetings to evaluate the damage from the compromises, including intrusions involving major telecommunications providers like Verizon, AT&T, and Lumen.

Verizon’s spokesperson, Rich Young, acknowledged the situation, stating, “We are aware that a highly sophisticated nation-state actor has reportedly targeted several U.S. telecommunications providers to gather intelligence.” The company is collaborating with law enforcement to address potential impacts.

Former National Security Agency Director Gen. Paul Nakasone emphasized the need for a strong response, stating, “This initiative by our adversaries cannot be ignored.” He underscored that while intelligence collection seems to be the primary goal, the scale of the operation distinguishes it from past efforts.

U.S. intelligence agencies have previously indicated that Russia favors Trump in the election while Iran aligns with Harris. China’s activities have been noted in down-ballot races, though its influence on the presidential campaign remains less clear. Intelligence officials caution that the dynamics may shift as Election Day approaches.
