Senior columnists at The Washington Post are challenging owner Jeff Bezos’ decision to halt the paper’s presidential endorsement, which they say undercuts the publication’s “commitment to democratic values.”
Jeff Bezos, who has owned The Washington Post since purchasing it from the Graham family in 2013, reportedly made the decision unilaterally. This choice to abstain from an endorsement marks a significant departure for the paper, which has traditionally taken clear editorial positions in past presidential elections, including endorsements in 2016 and 2020.
According to The Daily Beast, Bezos’ decision to block the planned endorsement of Kamala Harris came despite objections from Post publisher and CEO Will Lewis, Bezos’ appointee, who allegedly fought “tooth and nail” against the decision. A source close to The Post told The Daily Beast that “Will Lewis fought tooth and nail against this…he argued with Bezos.”
Lewis, who joined The Post amid some newsroom skepticism due to his previous role in a British newspaper scandal, has expressed private support for his newsroom’s editorial stance, sources claim. Nevertheless, he issued the official announcement on Friday: “The Washington Post will not be making an endorsement of a presidential candidate in this election. Nor in any future presidential election. We are returning to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates.”
On Friday evening, some of The Post’s most respected columnists, including E.J. Dionne Jr., David Ignatius, Ruth Marcus, and Eugene Robinson, released a joint statement condemning the decision, describing it as an abandonment of the newspaper’s principles.
“This is a moment for the institution to be making clear its commitment to democratic values, the rule of law, and international alliances,” they wrote. The statement continued, warning of the “threat that Donald Trump poses to them.”
Two of the paper’s most renowned journalists, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who famously reported on the Watergate scandal, voiced their concerns over the move. In a rare joint statement, they expressed that the decision disregarded the paper’s “overwhelming reportorial evidence on the threat Donald Trump poses to democracy.”
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Maraniss added to the criticism, describing the decision as “an act not of benign neutrality but of cowardice in the face of the biggest challenge to democracy in our post-World War II lifetimes.”
The decision has sparked backlash among readers and commentators alike, with a wave of subscribers and prominent activists announcing they would no longer support the paper. The Post’s senior columnists underscored that they see “no contradiction” between endorsing political candidates and being an independent news organization.
They argued, “An independent newspaper might someday choose to back away from making presidential endorsements. But this isn’t the right moment, when one candidate is advocating positions that directly threaten freedom of the press and the values of the Constitution.”
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, The Washington Post’s decision stands as a surprising shift in editorial direction for one of America’s most historic newspapers.

Most of the media are just commentators and promote individual beliefs and not the public. However, the people on the ground are more like journalists than those in the studios. I will give the post credit for the article they put out on 1/7/ 2021. I can not understand how I learned what could happen the last week of December 2020 relating to what could happen on 1/6/21 and the major parties ignored it but the Post printed the story on the 7th. I do wish that the Post and others would report about the new migrants that are on their way to the Unnnited States and how many children that have misplaced since 2021. Maybe if the media were honest, they would force Harris and this administration to admit they caused the problems with inflation and crime, but they won’t. Why is it that most medias will let the words from the left be acknowledged when it will only cause more harm to all Americans. Where are the reports about George Soros taking over the radio stations? Both democrats, republicans and Independents on the far side have caused more issues than anyone. I have said many times that when you forget history it will be repeated, and it happens every day. mote individual beliefs and not the public. With Trump coming back into power, lots of evil people and LameStreamMisleadia appear to be trying to hide the evil they’ve been doing and get back on his/our side!
LSM would be more believable/helpful if they reported on all 75 MURDERS that occur DAILY instead of just ONE daily… or focusing on the same prominent one all week long and ignoring the other 525 for the week! Also, mention warmongering Jokementia’s 6 new unneeded wars DAILY…
Plus, a vote for KamalToe means YOU endorse evil Democrats beloved junkies CRIME WAVE of 75+ MURDERS DAILY, 300+ O D DEATHS DAILY, 1,000+ BEATINGS/KNIFINGS/SHOOTINGS DAILY, and TENS of MILLIONS+ OTHER DAILY CRIMES in USA !!! Anyone voting for Democrats should be charged with ‘Accessory to MURDERS’ !!!
