Twice-crowned World’s Strongest Man Geoff Capes has died at 75, his family said Wednesday October 23. His legacy extends beyond the realms of athletics; Capes was also a prominent figure in birdkeeping and popular culture during the 1980s.

“The family of Geoffrey Capes would like to announce his sad passing today,” they stated. “Britain’s finest shot putter and twice World’s Strongest Man.” This succinct tribute reflects the immense impact Capes had on British sport.

Born in 1949 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, Capes showcased his athletic prowess on the global stage. He represented Great Britain in three Olympic Games from 1972 to 1980, and during that time, he set a national shot put record of 21.68 meters, a feat that remained unmatched for 44 years. Despite finishing fifth in the 1980 Olympics, Capes claimed two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and garnered numerous European medals, solidifying his status as one of the best.

Capes also served as a policeman, embodying dedication and discipline both on and off the field. His passion for budgerigar breeding was remarkable. In 2008, he became president of the Budgerigar Society, showcasing his commitment to this unique hobby. His expertise made him a sought-after voice in specialist publications on the subject.

At his peak, Capes stood an imposing 197 cm tall and weighed 170 kg. His strength was legendary; he clinched the World’s Strongest Man titles in 1983 and 1985. Known for extraordinary feats, such as tearing phone books and bending steel bars, Capes was a familiar name in Britain, celebrated for his physical abilities.

Capes’s influence reached far beyond athletics. He appeared in various commercials, including one where he dramatically rolled a car over with his bare hands.
