Spanish soccer hero Ferran Torres went from national treasure to internet lightning rod in a matter of hours after wearing a red “Make Spain Great Again” hat during the team’s wild homecoming celebration in Madrid.
Torres, 26, should have been basking in nothing but glory after delivering the goal that stunned the world. The FC Barcelona forward led Spain to a dramatic World Cup victory over defending champion Argentina on Sunday, burying the winner in overtime in the 106th minute and sending an entire country into delirium.
But by Monday, the goal was no longer the only thing people were talking about.
As thousands of screaming fans packed the streets of Madrid to welcome the champions home, Torres posted a video to his Instagram Story showing himself cheering with the crowd while wearing the bright red hat — a not-so-subtle twist on President Donald Trump’s famous “Make America Great Again” slogan.
And just like that, Spain’s victory party had a political grenade tossed into the middle of it.
The hat instantly set off a furious online debate, with fans split over whether Torres was trolling Trump, paying tribute to him, or simply stirring the pot for laughs.
Torres has not explained what he meant by wearing it, which only poured fuel on the fire.
One X user appeared to cheer the provocation, writing, “Are the leftists foaming at the mouth in rage?”
Others argued the outrage was ridiculous and insisted the hat was clearly meant as a joke.
“You have to go out, touch grass and talk to people more if you can’t see this is 100% a joke on Trump’s expense,” one Reddit user wrote.
But the controversy did not come out of nowhere. Torres had already raised eyebrows during the medal presentation when he shook Trump’s hand, even as some other finalists appeared to avoid or snub the president.
That moment, combined with the Trump-style hat the very next day, gave political junkies, soccer fans, and social media warriors all the ammunition they needed.
For Democrats and Trump critics, the image was especially jarring: a young European soccer star celebrating a historic World Cup win while wearing a slogan that looked ripped straight from America’s MAGA movement.
For others, it was nothing more than a cheeky victory-party stunt from a player riding the high of a lifetime.
Either way, Torres managed to do something almost as difficult as scoring a World Cup-winning goal: he hijacked the entire global conversation the next day.
Spain wanted a hero’s parade. The internet got a culture-war spectacle.
And until Torres explains what he meant, that red hat may be remembered almost as much as the goal that won Spain the World Cup.
