Prince Harry traveled to New York on Sunday, September 22, for Climate Week, drawing parallels to his father, King Charles, according to a former royal staffer.
Despite past tensions between the two, Harry’s advocacy for climate change and humanitarian causes brought to mind his father’s long-standing passion for similar issues.
Grant Harrold, King Charles’ former butler, remarked that Harry’s dedication to charity work, particularly his focus on climate change, is a reflection of both his mother, Princess Diana, and his father’s values. “Diana was a massive advocate for many charities, and Harry has been inspired by that. This trip has seen Harry speak about his mother and her legacy, and it’s definitely a tribute to her,” Harrold shared. He also noted that Harry’s involvement in climate initiatives “is a cause close to his father’s heart.”
Royal experts have speculated that Harry’s recent solo trips to New York, London, and Lesotho signal an effort to re-establish himself as a humanitarian figure.
Charlotte Griffiths, a royal commentator, mentioned that Harry’s focus on children’s charities and his work in Africa is a reminder of his longstanding commitment to philanthropy. “Harry is trying to remind us all that he started this incredible children’s charity in Africa for children born with AIDS,” she said.
The absence of Meghan Markle at these events has fueled speculation about the couple’s professional relationship. Griffiths suggested that Harry’s decision to appear without Meghan may be a strategic move to highlight his personal accomplishments, saying, “I think leaving Meghan out of it is possibly something they have decided together, because they don’t want the hysteria that happens when they’re together.”
An anonymous source added that Harry’s recent activities reflect his desire to be seen as a serious player on the global stage. “This feels like he is upping his game to cement his position internationally,” the source said, noting that Harry’s shift from royal duties to a more public role in the U.S. has not been without its challenges.
Richard Eden, editor of “Palace Confidential,” commented on the balancing act Harry faces between celebrity and royalty. While his humanitarian work in places like Lesotho is widely respected, Eden noted that Harry’s appearances on American talk shows have led to mixed reactions.
“Harry is treading a difficult line between celebrity and royalty,” Eden observed, contrasting his approach with that of his brother, Prince William, who Eden said would handle public appearances in a more controlled manner.
As Harry and Meghan continue to navigate their roles in the U.S., it remains to be seen how their careers will evolve and whether Harry’s efforts will help him carve out a new identity on the global stage.
