A wave of fury has erupted from Trump-aligned corners of the internet, after Melania Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio honored Bangladeshi student activists at a State Department ceremony—prompting accusations from MAGA influencers that the U.S. is “rewarding Islamic terrorism.”

The event in question? The 19th Annual International Women of Courage Awards—a long-running State Department tradition that recognizes global female leaders showing exceptional bravery. This year, the Madeleine Albright Honorary Group Award was given to the “Women Student Protest Leaders of Bangladesh,” a group credited with spearheading major demonstrations against authoritarian violence in 2024.

But conservative outrage quickly drowned out the ceremony’s original purpose.

“Why is the U.S. government giving awards to Soros-backed, USAID-funded Islamist revolutionaries?” raged far-right activist Laura Loomer on X. “They helped topple a democratically elected female leader—and now the country is overrun with rape and misogyny.”

Former First Lady Melania Trump, dressed in a striking leopardskin-print coat, delivered prepared remarks in the ornate Benjamin Franklin Room at the State Department. She praised the honorees as “symbols of how love transcends territories and boundaries,” drawing a standing ovation from the audience.

Rubio Faces Unexpected Fire

While Rubio may have expected applause for backing a bipartisan initiative to honor courageous women, the blowback from Trump loyalists was swift—and personal.

“If Rubio doesn’t rescind this award, he’s basically endorsing Islamic terror-backed color revolutions,” Loomer continued. “This is beyond embarrassing.”

Another post from MAGA-aligned users warned that such recognitions “make Melania look foolish” and demanded the award ceremony be canceled permanently.

“These ceremonies are dangerous. They humiliate our leaders,” posted one anonymous account popular in right-wing circles. “We’re celebrating people who hate our values.”

Lara Logan, the former CBS News reporter who has become a vocal far-right conspiracist, also chimed in, questioning whether the U.S. military or intelligence agencies had “abandoned their mission” by allowing the award to be granted.

“What we’re watching is sedition in plain sight,” Logan declared. “There’s no accountability anymore.”

Who Were the Honorees?

According to the State Department’s official program, the Bangladeshi student leaders were honored for their role in organizing large-scale nonviolent protests against political repression last summer.

The citation read in part:

“They risked their lives by standing between security forces and male protestors. Even after arrests and internet blackouts, they used encrypted tools to keep the movement alive.”

The group was not present at the ceremony—likely due to security concerns—though they were featured prominently in the program materials.

Other honorees hailed from countries including Israel, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and South Sudan, each with harrowing stories of resistance against injustice.

A Ceremony with History—and Now Controversy

The International Women of Courage Awards, established in 2007, has been hosted under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Past recipients have included journalists, whistleblowers, survivors of violence, and human rights activists.

This year, however, the spotlight has shifted from heroism to political chaos.

“This isn’t just about honoring women,” said a former State Department official familiar with the awards process, speaking on background. “It’s about promoting American values—democracy, freedom of speech, resistance to oppression. The fact that this is now seen as controversial says more about the current political climate than it does about the honorees.”

For now, neither Melania Trump nor Secretary Rubio have responded directly to the MAGA backlash.

But as the culture war consumes yet another bipartisan tradition, some wonder whether honoring courage can survive in a country where even awards are a political flashpoint.
