In yet another late-night social media tirade, former President Donald Trump lashed out at members of his own party, accusing four Republican senators of betraying him over his controversial push to impose tariffs on Canada—one of America’s closest allies.

Posting just before midnight on Truth Social, Trump targeted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), accusing them of “playing with the lives of the American people” and siding with what he called the “Radical Left Democrats and Drug Cartels.”

The outburst came as Senate Democrats, joined by a growing number of Republicans, advanced a resolution led by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) to block Trump’s new round of tariffs. The resolution would also revoke the national emergency Trump declared in February to justify the trade penalties—an emergency he claimed was necessary due to illegal immigration and fentanyl shipments.

But critics say Trump is using a fabricated crisis to stoke fear and push a reckless economic agenda.

“Canada is a friend, not an adversary,” Kaine said on the Senate floor. “We don’t treat partners like pawns in political games.”

Trump’s Tariff Chaos Sparks GOP Resistance

Trump’s proposal would slap a 25% tariff on Canadian imports—a move economists warn could disrupt key supply chains, raise prices for American consumers, and harm industries from agriculture to auto manufacturing.

Sen. Collins called the tariffs a “huge mistake,” warning they could trigger a “major disruption in the economies of both countries.” Rand Paul, typically a Trump ally, co-sponsored Kaine’s resolution, signaling a rare split in the party.

The backlash follows Trump’s erratic tariff policy in recent weeks. After announcing sweeping tariffs last month, he abruptly delayed their implementation following a market drop on March 6. The backpedal has left businesses uncertain and markets rattled.

“You don’t build a healthy economy by slapping tariffs on your allies,” said Larry Summers, former Treasury Secretary. “It’s political theater with real-world consequences.”

Trump Accuses GOP Senators of ‘TDS’

In his post, Trump dismissed the dissent as a symptom of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and urged voters in Kentucky, Maine, and Alaska to pressure their senators.

“What is wrong with them?” Trump wrote. “They have been unbelievably disloyal to hardworking Majority Leader John Thune and the Republican Party itself. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Trump claimed the resolution was a Democratic “ploy” to expose “the weakness” of Republican lawmakers, insisting it would ultimately fail in the House—and vowing to veto it if it ever reached his desk.

But insiders say the pressure is mounting.

“Trump may think this is about strength,” said a senior Senate aide, “but more and more Republicans are realizing that blind loyalty isn’t good policy—or good politics.”

What’s Next?

A Senate vote on the resolution is expected Wednesday. If it passes, it could mark a rare bipartisan rebuke of Trump’s trade policy and a sign of growing cracks within the GOP.

While Trump may still hold sway over the Republican base, his grip on the Senate appears to be loosening.

And as one Democratic strategist put it:

“When Trump starts attacking his own party in the middle of the night, you know he’s scared.”

  1. Republicans are stupid never united the Democrats are always united even if they disagree and get their policies done. But “No” little Republican Senators who think they are God and know what is best for the entire country and stop Republicans from governing that a Democrat would never do to their President. Look how they hid and surrounded the wagons for President Biden. These old times need to be replaced, recalled or defeated at their next election they are nothing more than stumbling blocks with huge EGO’s they Edge God Out of their thinking and become little picadillo Gods.

  2. No surprise from these four RINOs. The people will remember who is obstructing Trump’s agenda when voting comes around!!

  3. Dear Next Gen: like it or not, Donald Trump IS the President of the United States … NOT “FORMER”. Grow up and fix this ridiculous “error”.
