Melania Trump made a rare public appearance alongside President Donald Trump over the weekend — but one longtime Trump biographer claims the smiles don’t tell the whole story.
Author Michael Wolff has made the explosive allegation that the first lady “hates” her husband and that the couple rarely spends time together behind closed doors.
Wolff made the eyebrow-raising claims during an appearance on the “Inside Trump’s Head” podcast with Joanna Coles, where he recalled a conversation he says he once had with a senior Trump aide.
According to Wolff, he had questioned why Melania was largely absent from Donald Trump’s campaign appearances.
“I spoke to one of his aides, and this was during the campaign, and wondering again why [Melania] had never made one campaign appearance with him,” Wolff said.
When he pressed for an explanation, Wolff claimed the aide responded: “The reason is that she hates his guts.”
Wolff went even further, alleging that Donald and Melania “don’t really speak” and are “seldom in each other’s company.”
The author also claimed there were once doubts about whether Melania would even sit beside her husband at the 2024 Republican National Convention following the assassination attempt against Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“She just didn’t want to sit next to her husband,” Wolff alleged.
The White House and Melania have previously pushed back sharply against claims and reporting from Wolff, whose books and public comments about the Trump family have repeatedly sparked controversy.
Rare Appearance Gets People Talking
The fresh allegations come after Melania stepped back into the spotlight over the weekend at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar race in Washington, D.C.
The president appeared at the event with Melania and longtime aide Natalie Harp, 35, who has also attracted attention over her unusually close working relationship with Trump.
Donald and Melania were photographed smiling together, but their animated conversation quickly became a talking point online.
A lip reader quoted by RadarOnline claimed Melania told Trump: “That’s the problem, people react.”
Trump allegedly responded: “Well, knock it off.”
Melania then reportedly replied: “Are you?” before adding: “It happened two times… I can’t take any more.”
Because the conversation was not publicly audible, the supposed exchange remains an interpretation rather than a confirmed transcript.
Still, the unusual amount of public interaction between the president and first lady immediately caught viewers’ attention.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen them interact this much in public,” one social media user remarked.
Melania Has Kept a Low Profile
Melania has been notably absent from many of her husband’s public appearances in 2026, making only a limited number of appearances alongside him.
Former Trump White House deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews has also spoken publicly about just how rarely she encountered the first lady.
“I never met the first lady, even though I was the deputy spokesperson for the president on his campaign and in the White House,” Matthews said during an appearance on the “On Sunday with Jack Cocchiarella” podcast.
“And I think that’s pretty telling.”
Matthews, who resigned following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, also pointed to previous reports that Melania received payments connected to campaign appearances.
“We know too that — it’s been reported — that Melania gets paid for showing up at events when they were on the campaign trail,” Matthews said.
She added: “It’s crazy to think that you have to pay your own wife to show up somewhere.”
The circumstances surrounding such payments have been the subject of previous media reporting, though Matthews’ comments do not establish that Melania only appears publicly for money.
Melania Has Long Rejected ‘Gold Digger’ Claims
For her part, Melania has spent decades rejecting the idea that she married Trump for his wealth.
During a 1999 ABC News interview, journalist Don Dahler asked her about accusations that she was a “gold digger.”
“People don’t know me,” Melania responded. “People who talk like this don’t know me.”
She then argued that money and luxury could never replace an actual relationship.
“You cannot sleep, or hug, or have a conversation with beautiful things, with a beautiful apartment, a beautiful plane, beautiful cars, or beautiful houses,” she said.
Melania, who is 24 years younger than her husband, has continued to maintain a far more private public profile than most modern first ladies.
And with Wolff now reviving sensational claims about trouble inside the Trump marriage, every rare appearance between the two is likely to be watched — and dissected — more closely than ever.
