Second Lady Usha Vance suffered a frightening stumble while carrying her nine-week-old baby Monday, briefly losing her footing as uniformed service members nearby remained in position.

The tense moment unfolded at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland as Usha and Vice President JD Vance began a lengthy trip to Alaska, where the vice president is campaigning for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Video from the tarmac shows Usha descending from the vice presidential helicopter with newborn son Alec strapped to her chest and a large bag over her shoulder.

As she reached the bottom of the steps, the 40-year-old suddenly stumbled forward.

Usha managed to catch herself using the railing before regaining her balance. She then smiled, appearing relieved, and continued walking with the baby safely secured against her.

Several uniformed service members standing nearby remained at attention during the incident.

Their reaction quickly became a talking point online, with some viewers questioning why nobody appeared to move when the second lady nearly fell while carrying a newborn.

Others focused their criticism on JD Vance, who emerged from the helicopter moments later carrying the couple’s 4-year-old daughter, Mirabel.

Some social media users argued that the vice president could have carried his wife’s bag while she navigated the aircraft steps with Alec.

There is no indication, however, that Usha or the baby was injured, and the brief video does not establish whether the military personnel stationed nearby were expected or permitted to leave their positions.

The family was traveling to Alaska as Vance throws himself into the closing weeks of a midterm campaign that has become increasingly important for President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans.

Vance is campaigning for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, who is facing a serious challenge from Democrat Mary Peltola in a race that could help determine control of the Senate.

The Alaska stop comes as Republicans are confronting warning signs nationally, particularly over voter concerns about the cost of living and the economy. Democrats are also hoping dissatisfaction with the Trump administration can help them win back control of at least one chamber of Congress.

For Vance, who has become one of the administration’s most prominent campaign surrogates, the trip is part of an aggressive final push to energize Republican voters.

His wife and two of their four children joined him for the unusually long journey.

“This is Usha’s 50th state,” Vance told reporters before the trip, joking that the milestone explained why the family was taking a nine-week-old baby on a roughly seven-and-a-half-hour flight.

He added that if he appeared “haggard and stressed out” during his speech later in the day, traveling with a newborn would be the reason.

Alec Neel Vance was born July 19 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. His birth made history as the first child born to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years.

The Vances also have three older children: Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.

Usha has spoken publicly about how unusual it has been to raise a newborn while her husband serves as vice president, particularly because even baby Alec now receives Secret Service protection.

She recently described the situation as somewhat surreal because the newborn is almost always physically attached to her anyway.

Usha has also said that raising a baby under constant public scrutiny can make ordinary parenting challenges feel very different.

Monday’s stumble offered an unusually visible example of that reality.

What would normally have been a brief, relatable parenting scare instead unfolded in front of cameras and quickly became another political talking point as the Vance family headed into one of the most consequential stretches of the 2026 campaign.
