A seaplane carrying eight people crash-landed in New York City’s East River on Sunday, triggering a frantic emergency response as the aircraft partially capsized in the choppy water.
Dramatic footage from the scene showed the plane bobbing in the river with one wing submerged while rescue crews surrounded the aircraft and worked to pull everyone aboard to safety.
The hard landing happened shortly after noon near the Manhattan ferry and Skyport terminal at East 23rd Street and FDR Drive, officials told the New York Post.
All eight people were rescued by the FDNY. Two passengers suffered minor injuries and were evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene, officials said. No serious injuries were reported.
Photos showed first responders attending to at least one person on a stretcher as police and rescue boats crowded around the damaged aircraft.
At least five vessels took part in the emergency operation, while another seaplane was spotted nearby during the response.
Once the passengers were safely removed, crews managed to turn the aircraft upright and tow it back toward the docks.
Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The frightening incident came less than a month after another seaplane ran into trouble in the East River. That aircraft was hit by a wave during takeoff and left struggling in the water near the Throgs Neck Bridge before it was rescued.
