A deadly overnight train collision in Germany sent two freight wagons tumbling off a railway bridge and crashing onto the street below, authorities said Saturday.

The dramatic wreck happened in Munich, where two freight trains collided on a bridge for reasons that remain under investigation. The impact was powerful enough to derail multiple wagons, sending two of them over the edge.

Officials said the wagons plunged about 16 feet from the bridge before landing on the road beneath, creating a chaotic scene that forced police to shut down the street and warn drivers to avoid the area.

One person was killed in the crash, according to the German news agency dpa. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.

Despite the alarming scene, officials said the fallen wagons were empty and were not carrying cargo at the time. Police also said there was no threat to the public.

No other injuries were immediately reported.

Emergency crews remained at the scene Saturday as recovery and cleanup operations continued. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
