Trump’s Doctor Faces New Pressure as Questions Grow Over President’s Health and 22 Medical Specialists

President Donald Trump’s health is once again under the microscope, and this time Democrats are demanding answers about what they say looks like an unusually secretive medical situation inside the White House.

Trump, who turned 80 on Sunday, underwent a physical exam on May 26. Three days later, his physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella, released a memo declaring the president to be in “excellent health” and “fully fit” to perform the duties of the presidency.

But that reassurance has done little to quiet growing concerns.

According to the White House, Trump’s latest physical involved consultations with 22 medical specialists. That is a sharp increase from the 14 specialists reportedly involved in his April 2025 annual exam, and it has raised fresh questions about why a president described as healthy would need such an extensive medical team.

Now, Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is pressing Barbabella for answers.

In a Thursday letter, Raskin wrote that it “has apparently taken 22 medical specialists to pronounce President Donald Trump in ‘excellent health.’”

“I am deeply concerned about why such a large team is now necessary,” Raskin added. He accused the White House of refusing to disclose who the doctors were, what specialties they practiced, and why what was described as a routine physical required a medical team “nearly the size of a major league baseball team roster.”

The questions come as Trump faces renewed scrutiny over several visible health concerns, including bruised hands, swollen ankles, and moments during public appearances when he has appeared to doze off.

Those concerns intensified this week during Trump’s overseas trip for the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France. Photos from the trip appeared to show markings on his hands and swelling around his ankles, prompting another round of questions about what the White House may not be saying.

The White House has previously claimed that bruising on Trump’s hands was caused by frequent handshaking while he was taking aspirin. But critics say that explanation does not address newer marks that have appeared, including a crescent-shaped mark seen on his left hand while he met with world leaders.

When asked about the new marking, the White House reportedly did not provide a direct explanation and instead pointed to Trump’s packed schedule.

Raskin’s latest letter follows an earlier inquiry he launched in April, when he asked Barbabella to answer questions about Trump’s health and appear before lawmakers. According to Raskin, the physician never responded.

Since then, Raskin argued, the concerns have only grown more serious.

“On May 26, 2026, the president spent roughly three hours at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in his third visit to the hospital in 13 months,” Raskin wrote. “No president in recent history has been to the hospital nearly so frequently.”

Raskin also questioned why the White House described the May visit as a “routine annual” exam, noting that it would make the visit Trump’s second “routine annual” evaluation in a single year.

The Democratic congressman said Barbabella’s memo failed to explain why 22 specialists were needed to declare Trump healthy. He also pointed to comments from Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a cardiologist, who called the number of specialists “extraordinary.”

Raskin said the memo left several “startling facts unexplained,” including why Trump reportedly needed another CT scan just six months after an October scan.

“In light of these troubling medical reports, so many unexplained signs of illness, and the existence of nearly two dozen different doctors on the case, the American people deserve honest and serious answers about whether he is up to the task,” Raskin wrote.

Raskin is now calling on Barbabella to identify the 22 specialists involved in Trump’s May exam, release their consultation reports, turn over lab and imaging results, and provide a list of all medications the president is taking.

He has also previously demanded the release of Trump’s cognitive test results and asked that the White House physician answer lawmakers’ questions under oath.

The White House, however, appears unwilling to provide the additional transparency.

When asked by The Daily Beast whether the administration would make more information available, White House spokesman Davis Ingle responded with a political attack rather than a detailed medical explanation.

“Lightweight Jamie Raskin is a stupid person’s idea of a smart person,” Ingle said. “President Trump’s sharpness, unmatched energy, and historic accessibility stand in stark contrast to what we saw during the last administration when Democrats like Raskin intentionally covered up Joe Biden’s serious mental and physical decline from the American people.”

But for Democrats, that response only adds to the controversy.

For years, Trump and his allies have aggressively questioned the health, stamina, and mental fitness of their political opponents. Now, as the oldest person ever elected president faces visible health questions of his own, critics say the White House is refusing to meet the same standard of disclosure it has demanded from others.

With Trump making repeated hospital visits, relying on a growing number of medical specialists, and appearing in public with unexplained marks and swelling, Raskin argues that the issue is no longer about political gossip.

It is about whether the American people are being given the full truth about the health of the man occupying the most powerful office in the country.
