A 19-year-old Alabama nurse died after suddenly collapsing during her overnight shift at the very children’s hospital where she had dedicated herself to caring for others.

Jakoya Renae Morgan, of Center Point, was working at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham on Tuesday, May 26, when she was found unresponsive around 4 a.m., according to multiple local reports.

Morgan was rushed to UAB Hospital, but she was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

The shocking death has left colleagues, loved ones and the broader Birmingham community grieving a young health care worker whose life ended in the middle of a shift at one of the state’s most important hospitals for children.

Children’s of Alabama confirmed Morgan was an employee at the hospital and described her death as a “sudden loss.”

“We extend our deepest sympathies to her family and her colleagues,” the hospital said in a statement. “In any emergency like this involving a patient or employee, our care teams respond immediately and initiate appropriate life-saving measures as they are trained to do.”

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy was performed the same day Morgan died. Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the early findings pointed to a major medical crisis, though the final cause of death has not yet been determined.

“Autopsy did reveal an acute and significant medical event, that can be associated with a chronic health condition the decedent was previously diagnosed with,” Yates said.

Authorities said there was no evidence of foul play.

Still, Morgan’s death is heartbreaking in a way that has shaken many who read about it. She was only 19, just beginning her adult life and career, and working in a field that has become increasingly demanding in recent years as hospitals across the country continue to depend on young nurses, aides and staffers to shoulder enormous pressure.

Health care workers are often praised as heroes, especially when tragedy strikes, but stories like Morgan’s are a brutal reminder that the people caring for patients are also human beings with their own health battles, exhaustion and vulnerabilities.

For now, officials are waiting on additional laboratory studies before releasing a final cause of death.

Morgan’s sudden passing leaves behind painful questions and a grieving community stunned by the loss of a young woman who went to work to help others and never came home.
