A family outing at an Alabama nature preserve turned into an unimaginable nightmare when two young siblings were swept away from their mother in a creek and drowned, authorities said.

The heartbreaking incident happened Saturday afternoon at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve in Pinson, Alabama, where a boy and a girl, believed to be between 7 and 11 years old, were in the water with their mother when the current pulled them under, according to local reports.

What began as a day outdoors ended in panic as the children disappeared beneath the water.

Two bystanders and a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy rushed into action, pulling the brother and sister from the creek and immediately performing CPR in a desperate attempt to save their lives.

Emergency crews transported both children to a local hospital, but despite the frantic rescue efforts, they were later pronounced dead.

Their names have not been publicly released.

The tragedy has shaken the local community and left officials mourning what should have been an ordinary family visit to one of the area’s most popular outdoor spots.

“We want to express our deepest sympathy to the family, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss,” the Jefferson County Greenways community, which oversees Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, said in a statement.

The organization also thanked the first responders and emergency personnel who tried to save the children.

“We also want to thank the first responders and emergency personnel for their tireless efforts during the response,” the statement continued.

Turkey Creek Nature Preserve is known for its scenic water, trails, and outdoor recreation, but Saturday’s tragedy is now a devastating reminder of how quickly moving water can become deadly, especially for children.

Officials have not released further details about how the children were swept away or whether recent conditions may have affected the creek’s current.

The deaths remain under investigation.
