Ted Danson is opening up about a scary wake-up call that forced him to face a reality many fans never imagined — even TV legends aren’t invincible.
The 78-year-old Cheers icon shocked listeners this week after revealing he recently went through a “health scare” that completely changed the way he looks at life.
Speaking candidly on his podcast, Where Everyone Knows Your Name — a playful nod to the legendary Cheers theme song — Danson admitted the experience hit him hard emotionally, even though he says he’s now doing okay.
“The last thing that kind of hit me that was very liberating was [that] I had a bit of a health scare,” the actor revealed during the May 6 episode while chatting with fellow sitcom star Valerie Bertinelli.
Thankfully, the Hollywood veteran quickly reassured worried fans.
“I’m totally fine,” Danson said. “But it was like, oh, well that’s real.”
And for the beloved actor, the moment became impossible to ignore.
The Golden Globe winner admitted the ordeal forced him to confront his own mortality in a deeply humbling way.
“Mortality is the real deal, you know. It’s not just a rumor,” Danson joked. “Ted Danson doesn’t get a free pass. Love his work, but…”
The actor — who also starred in hit shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Good Place — explained that the scare came despite living a relatively healthy lifestyle.
Still, the frightening moment pushed him to make major changes behind the scenes.
“It was very humbling and calming,” he shared. “I’m fine, you know. But it was, I think, the best thing that could’ve happened to me, and I’m doing some things differently.”
One of those changes includes a new meditation routine with his wife, actress Mary Steenburgen, 73.
The longtime couple now meditate together twice a day — something Danson said he had talked about doing for years but never seriously committed to until now.
The pair, who have been one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples for decades, previously worked together in the 1995 film Pontiac Moon and recently reunited onscreen in A Man on the Inside.
While Danson chose not to reveal exactly what caused the health scare, he made it clear the experience left a lasting impact on him emotionally and mentally.
And according to the actor, meditation has already changed the way he interacts with people around him.
“What [meditation has] done for me, the biggest gift of all — you can be curious about other people, you can listen, and you can be supportive,” he explained.
For many fans who grew up watching the Emmy-winning star behind the bar on Cheers, the emotional confession was a sobering reminder that even Hollywood legends eventually have to slow down and take care of themselves.
