Donald Trump turned what was supposed to be a White House event honoring military mothers into yet another head-scratching spectacle, this time claiming he had to call in the military to fix his phone because it kept changing Melania’s name to “Melody.”
Speaking at a reception ahead of Mother’s Day, Trump drifted into one of his now-familiar off-script monologues while acknowledging a woman named Melody in the crowd. Instead of staying focused on the event, he launched into a rambling story about autocorrect, Truth Social, and how the typo supposedly caused him endless embarrassment.
“I love the name Melody,” Trump said, before explaining that every time he tried to type Melania’s name into one of his social media posts, his phone would allegedly change it. According to Trump, the issue became so frequent that people started mocking him for appearing not to know his own wife’s name.
He acted out his typing, made noises to mimic himself working “very fast,” and said he often posted without proofreading, only to later discover that Melania had once again been transformed into “Melody.” Trump complained that he was getting “absolutely decimated” over the mistake and blamed the device instead of himself.
Then came the strangest part. Trump claimed the people who finally solved the problem were members of the military.
“You know who corrected it? The military,” he said, prompting polite laughter from the room. “I said, ‘Come here. You got to correct this. You’re killing me.’”
The moment quickly became another example of Trump’s ability to hijack even a ceremonial event and turn it into a bizarre personal grievance session. What was meant to be a tribute to military mothers instead became a showcase for the president’s obsession with slights, public ridicule, and his own social media habits.
Melania Trump, seated nearby after introducing her husband, watched as he spiraled through the story. Earlier in the event, she drew an awkward reaction of her own when she read a line praising Trump’s empathy and described him as a caring leader, triggering laughter from women in the audience before she could even finish.
When Trump took the podium, he didn’t limit himself to the occasion for long. After the autocorrect tangent, he bounced from Iran to crime in Democratic-led cities, bragged again about his 2024 election victory, and veered into complaints about the White House needing a ballroom. In classic Trump fashion, the event became less about honoring mothers and more about whatever happened to be on his mind at that moment.
He also made a dubious claim about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, saying Hegseth had stood on a table during the chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. But available images from the night showed no such thing, adding yet another questionable flourish to an already erratic set of remarks.
For critics, the episode was vintage Trump: a formal White House gathering sidetracked by strange storytelling, exaggerated claims, and a complete inability to stay on message. Even at an event designed to spotlight military families, Trump once again made himself the main character.
