Donald Trump is taking another public opinion hit, and this time the comparison is especially striking.
A new University of Massachusetts/YouGov survey measuring Americans’ views of more than 20 major public figures found former President Barack Obama far ahead of Trump in overall favorability. Obama landed with a 50 percent favorable rating and 36 percent unfavorable, giving him a net positive score of +14. Trump, by contrast, came in at 36 percent favorable and 54 percent unfavorable, leaving him with a net score of -18.
That gap put Obama well ahead of Trump and made him one of the strongest-performing political names in the survey. The only other U.S. president to finish in positive territory was George W. Bush at +5, while Joe Biden posted a net -19.
But even Obama was nowhere near the poll’s biggest winner.
That honor went to Dolly Parton, who towered over the entire field with a staggering 70 percent favorability rating and just 5 percent unfavorable, for an eye-popping net score of +65. In a survey packed with presidents, billionaires, and global power players, it was Parton who emerged as the public’s runaway favorite by a mile.
The numbers land at a rough moment for Trump more broadly, as other recent polling has also pointed to serious political weakness. A CNN poll conducted by SSRS found Trump’s approval on handling the economy had fallen to 31 percent, which SSRS described as a new career low. The same release said roughly two-thirds of Americans believe his policies have worsened economic conditions in the United States.
There are also warning signs tied to the conflict with Iran and rising consumer anxiety. A CBS News/YouGov survey published April 12 found that Americans continue to view the conflict negatively, with many saying U.S. goals have not been met. CBS also reported that gas prices are weighing on public views of both the economy and Trump’s handling of it, helping push his ratings on the economy, inflation, and overall job approval to the lowest levels of this term.
UMass polling released in late March painted an equally grim picture for the White House, showing Trump’s overall approval at 33 percent and his disapproval at 62 percent. The university said his support had slipped notably among independents, moderates, working-class Americans, men, and African Americans compared with April 2025.
Even with those numbers stacking up against him, Trump has continued to insist his standing is strong. But the latest wave of polls tells a very different story — one in which Obama is comfortably ahead, the public mood remains sour, and Trump is once again staring down a brutal reality check.
