Donald Trump’s long-rumored love affair with junk food is back in the spotlight, and this time the details are somehow even more bizarre than expected.

In a revealing conversation on Donald Trump Jr.’s Rumble podcast, Dr. Mehmet Oz peeled back the curtain on what he says really goes on during meetings with the president. What started as a light chat about Trump’s famously fast-food-heavy habits quickly turned into a jaw-dropping look at the logic Trump allegedly uses to defend his steady stream of Diet Coke, candy, and other unhealthy favorites.

Oz, now serving in Trump’s orbit as administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, joked that the president recreates his infamous McDonald’s feast in the Oval Office on a regular basis. But the most eyebrow-raising moment came when Oz described Trump’s reasoning for drinking Diet Coke.

According to Oz, Trump has argued that diet soda must be good for him because it can kill grass, so it should also be able to kill cancer cells in the body. Oz said he was not even going to try to argue with that claim in the moment, making it clear even he seemed stunned by the president’s explanation.

And that was not the end of it.

Oz also recalled catching Trump drinking a Fanta on Air Force One and reacting with disbelief. Trump, he said, defended that choice too, allegedly insisting that because it was “fresh-squeezed,” it could not be that bad for him. The story added to an already surreal portrait of a president whose diet seems built less on nutrition and more on personal theories that would leave most doctors cringing.

Donald Trump Jr., however, rushed in to defend his father. He argued that there may be something unusual about Trump’s ability to function on such a diet, pointing to his energy, stamina, and recall as proof that he could be some kind of exception. In other words, even as the discussion highlighted habits most health experts would warn against, Trump’s son tried to spin them into evidence of his father’s supposed resilience.

Oz also attempted to soften the blow by pointing back to Trump’s past health reports, including his appearance on The Dr. Oz Show during the 2016 campaign, when Oz declared him in “perfect health.” He further explained that Trump has long justified eating junk food on the campaign trail by saying chain restaurants are safer because they have stricter quality control.

That explanation may reassure some of Trump’s allies, but it also underscored the strange contradiction at the center of the conversation. Here was one of the country’s most recognizable TV doctors and a top Trump family surrogate trying to explain away a diet built around candy bars, soda, and fast food while still insisting the president is doing just fine.

Trump Jr. also framed his father’s habits as a substitute for more dangerous vices, saying Trump does not drink or use drugs and has joked that Diet Coke and candy are basically his version of alcohol. Oz echoed that somewhat, noting there have been times when Trump was not actually eating much at meals, while also praising the food at Mar-a-Lago.

Still, for critics, the bigger takeaway was not that Trump skips a meal here and there. It was the image of a sitting president hitting the red button for soda, raiding a candy drawer, and defending it all with logic that sounds more like a late-night punchline than serious health advice.

The moment also puts Oz in an awkward light. Known for years as a celebrity doctor who built a brand around health, dieting, and wellness, he has often faced criticism for promoting questionable remedies and weight-loss products. Now, instead of pushing clean eating, he is helping explain why one of the most powerful men in the world seems convinced that soda might somehow be medicinal.

For Democrats and Trump critics, the exchange is likely to reinforce a broader concern that has followed him for years: that he often treats serious issues with reckless instincts, half-baked theories, and absolute confidence. And when even Dr. Oz sounds caught off guard, that says plenty.
