Donald Trump is facing a fresh wave of scrutiny after trying to explain away a bizarre social media post that many critics say only deepened concerns about his judgment and mental sharpness.

The controversy erupted after Trump’s Truth Social account shared an AI-generated image that appeared to show him in a Christ-like role, standing over a hospital patient with a hand extended in what looked like a healing gesture.

The over-the-top image was packed with patriotic symbols, including bald eagles, the Statue of Liberty, the Lincoln Memorial, and an American flag, making it feel less like a random post and more like a carefully crafted piece of political mythology. But by Monday, the image had been deleted, and Trump was left trying to explain what exactly he thought he was sharing in the first place.

Speaking to reporters, the 79-year-old president insisted he believed the image showed him “as a doctor making people better” and said he thought it had something to do with the Red Cross. He brushed off the backlash by blaming the “fake news,” but the explanation only fueled even more disbelief online.

For many observers, it was not just the post itself that raised eyebrows. It was the fact that Trump seemed either unable or unwilling to acknowledge what the image clearly portrayed.

That disconnect set off a firestorm across social media, where critics seized on the moment as another unsettling example of what they view as Trump’s increasingly erratic behavior.

Some openly questioned whether the president’s latest explanation pointed to deeper cognitive problems, while others argued it was simply another case of him trying to dodge accountability with an excuse that made no sense. Either way, the reaction was swift, brutal, and impossible to ignore.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the deleted post, leaving the confusion hanging in the air. And that silence only added to the sense that yet another strange Trump episode had spun out without a coherent cleanup strategy.

The moment also came at a politically explosive time. Just before sharing the now-deleted image, Trump had launched into a furious Truth Social rant aimed at Pope Leo XIV, attacking the American-born pontiff for criticizing his stance on Iran.

In the lengthy outburst, Trump called the pope “weak” and accused him of siding with the “Radical Left,” while also bizarrely claiming Leo’s elevation to the papacy was tied to the Church’s desire to better deal with him.

If Trump expected that tirade to intimidate the Vatican, it did not work. Pope Leo responded Monday with calm defiance, making clear he had no intention of backing down.

Speaking to reporters during a papal flight to Algiers, the pope said he had no fear of the Trump administration and would continue speaking openly about the Gospel and the issues he believes matter. Then he delivered a subtle but unmistakable jab at Trump’s social media platform, saying the name Truth Social was “ironic” and adding, “Say no more.”

Taken together, the bizarre Jesus image, the Red Cross explanation, the deleted post, and the pope feud created the kind of chaotic political spectacle that has become deeply familiar in Trump’s orbit.

But for critics already alarmed by his public stumbles, verbal misfires, and increasingly strange behavior, this latest episode felt different. It was not just another inflammatory Trump moment. It was one that left many asking whether the president fully understood the image he promoted or the explanation he gave after the backlash exploded.

And that question is now hanging over the White House louder than ever.
