A violent late-night incident inside a Brooklyn apartment building has left one elderly woman dead and another seriously injured — and is raising fresh concerns about how vulnerable New Yorkers are being protected.

Police say the attack unfolded just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday inside the Ebbets Field Apartments in Crown Heights. When officers arrived, they found a 74-year-old woman suffering from multiple stab wounds to her head and arms. A second victim, 72, had deep cuts across her back and arms.

Authorities say both women were attacked with a pair of scissors — a brutal and deeply personal weapon that suggests the violence escalated quickly inside the home.

The older victim was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The second woman survived and is currently listed in stable condition.

According to investigators, the suspected attacker — a 43-year-old roommate — barricaded herself inside the apartment following the assault. Officers were forced to break down the door to take her into custody.

Sources say the violence stemmed from an argument between roommates, though the exact trigger remains under investigation.

Neighbors described a chaotic and terrifying scene in the moments before police arrived.

“We heard yelling and banging,” said one resident, who asked not to be identified. “Someone was screaming, ‘Let me in!’ It just kept getting louder — then everything went quiet.”

Another neighbor, Diana Harris, said what she heard from the hallway was deeply disturbing.

“We heard police saying there were multiple stab wounds with scissors,” she said. “These were kind, older women. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Her niece, Anissa Christian, echoed that sentiment — and pointed to a broader issue.

“You think it’s just a normal argument,” she said. “But sometimes people don’t have the support they need, and it turns into something tragic like this.”

The suspect had reportedly moved into the apartment just five months ago, according to neighbors.

Police have not yet released the name of the woman who died, pending notification of her family. The 43-year-old suspect remains in custody and is being questioned at a local precinct. Charges are expected.

The case is already sparking renewed debate over housing stability, mental health resources, and safety in shared living environments — particularly for seniors.

For many in Crown Heights, the shock is still settling in.

“This shouldn’t happen anywhere,” one resident said. “But especially not to elderly women in their own home.”
