Is Prince Andrew plotting a royal rebrand worthy of a spy thriller?
Sources claim the disgraced Duke of York, 65, is quietly considering a dramatic identity makeover — and it allegedly comes with a title twist straight out of a James Bond novel.
According to insiders, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has floated the idea of styling himself as “Commander Mountbatten-Windsor” if he relocates to the Middle East amid renewed scrutiny surrounding his past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Yes, Commander.
The rank isn’t random. James Bond famously held the title of Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve in the original novels by Ian Fleming — and royal watchers say Andrew is more than aware of the comparison.
One palace insider claimed the former prince believes the title gives him an air of “authority” and “legitimacy” — especially in regions where rank and status carry weight.
“In Andrew’s mind, ‘Commander Mountbatten-Windsor’ sounds respectable,” a source alleged. “He thinks it travels well internationally. He’s trying to project that he’s still someone of standing — not a man in exile.”
Andrew was officially stripped of his royal and military patronages and styles in recent years. In 2025, the Defence Council confirmed he reverted from Vice Admiral to his substantive retirement rank of Commander in the Royal Navy.
So technically? The rank exists.
But critics say using it publicly now could look like a desperate attempt at damage control.
Royal insiders say advisers have discussed potential overseas “options,” including Bahrain or Saudi Arabia — regions where Andrew previously cultivated relationships during his time as a UK trade envoy.
The alleged goal? A reset.
But not everyone thinks it’s a smart play.
“From a reputational standpoint, this is risky,” one defense source reportedly warned. “You can change the name on the business card, but the Epstein shadow doesn’t disappear.”
Andrew has repeatedly denied wrongdoing related to Epstein and settled a civil lawsuit in the U.S. without admitting liability. Still, public opinion in Britain remains icy.
While speculation swirls about a Gulf relocation, Andrew is reportedly expected to remain near the Sandringham estate for now after vacating Royal Lodge in Windsor.
Locals in Norfolk aren’t exactly thrilled.
One resident fumed that bringing Andrew into the quiet community risks turning a peaceful royal enclave into a media circus. “It’s going to drag unwanted attention here,” the local reportedly said. “That’s what really upsets people.”
Another added they fear “cameras, journalists, gawkers” once he settles in.
A royal household insider summed it up bluntly: this is about control.
“Andrew is trying to reclaim some sense of identity after losing nearly everything that once defined him,” the source claimed. “Using ‘Commander’ would give him something tangible again.”
But image experts warn that reinvention only goes so far.
Titles can be tweaked. Branding can be polished. But reputations? That’s a much harder rewrite.
And if Prince Andrew really leans into the Bond-style moniker overseas, critics say he risks becoming more punchline than power player.
Stay tuned — because if this royal reinvention becomes reality, it may be the most dramatic chapter yet in Andrew’s ongoing saga.
