A veteran forensic pathologist is reigniting one of the most controversial death investigations in modern American history.

Dr. Michael Baden, who observed the autopsy of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, says the official ruling of suicide does not add up.

His conclusion is blunt: “The evidence is more consistent with strangulation than with suicidal hanging.”

Epstein, 66, was found dead on August 10, 2019, inside his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Authorities quickly determined he had hanged himself using a bedsheet tied to a bunk bed.

But Baden, hired by Epstein’s brother to observe the autopsy, says key forensic details tell a different story.

Baden has spent decades reviewing inmate deaths as former chairman of the New York State Correction Medical Review Board. He says he has examined hundreds of jailhouse suicides.

“In 99 percent of prison hangings I’ve investigated,” Baden said in a recent interview, “I have never seen three fractures like this.”

According to Baden, Epstein had fractures on both sides of his larynx and another fracture near the hyoid bone, close to the Adam’s apple. He says that pattern is more commonly associated with manual strangulation — force applied directly to the neck — rather than a hanging.

“The most common way to commit suicide in jail is by hanging,” he said. “But these fractures are extremely unusual for that scenario.”

Baden also disputes the claim that the bedsheet noose caused the injuries.

“The ligature mark doesn’t match the noose,” he said. “It appeared narrower and showed a pattern that suggests a different object may have been involved.”

He pointed to hemorrhaging in Epstein’s eyes — petechial hemorrhages — which he says are often seen in cases of severe neck compression.

Those findings, Baden argues, warrant further scrutiny.

“At the time of the autopsy, we agreed more information was needed to determine the cause and manner of death,” he said.

Despite that, the New York City medical examiner ruled Epstein’s death a suicide just days later.

Epstein’s death has fueled years of speculation. Surveillance cameras outside his cell malfunctioned. Guards reportedly fell asleep and failed to conduct required checks. High-profile figures across politics, business, and entertainment had been linked to Epstein in court filings.

The combination of powerful associates and procedural failures turned the case into a lightning rod for conspiracy theories across the political spectrum.

Now, Baden says the matter should not be considered closed.

“Given the totality of the findings,” he said, “a reinvestigation into the cause and manner of death is warranted.”

Epstein was awaiting trial on federal charges that alleged he trafficked underage girls for sex. His death ended any chance of a public courtroom reckoning.

For many Americans, that remains the core issue.

No trial.
No testimony under oath.
No cross-examination of powerful names.

And now, renewed questions about how he died.

Whether authorities ever reopen the case remains uncertain. But with one of the country’s most recognizable forensic experts challenging the official narrative, the debate over what really happened behind those prison walls is far from over.
