An 18-year-old college student described by loved ones as warm, silly, brave, and deeply adored was killed in a chain of crashes on a snow-covered Pennsylvania highway earlier this month.
The deadly pileup happened on February 6 along Interstate 79 in Jackson Township, where icy roads triggered multiple collisions involving 25 vehicles, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
One of those crashes proved fatal. Investigators say a 2022 Subaru Impreza slid across the slick highway and crashed into a trailer hauled by a Chevrolet Silverado. The driver of the Subaru was identified as Slippery Rock University freshman Evan Gingo, who died from his injuries at the scene. The pickup driver, a 49-year-old man, was unharmed. Nine others were injured in the separate crashes that unfolded along the interstate.
Gingo, who was studying exercise science and hoped to become a physical therapist, was remembered as a devoted son, big brother, and boyfriend. His obituary describes him as smart, silly, kind, sensitive, and brave — someone whose smile “lit up every room.” He loved soccer, his part-time job at Dunkin’, and spending time with the people he cared about most.
“He loved with all of his heart, he really did, and he showed that every single day,” his girlfriend, Madison Prince, told KDKA.
Gingo’s family shared that their hearts are “forever broken,” but they’re grateful for the overwhelming community support. “We are so thankful for the time we got to spend loving Evan while he was still on this Earth,” their tribute reads.
