Winter Olympic fans watched in shock on Sunday as Lindsey Vonn’s highly anticipated return to the Games came to a heartbreaking end just seconds into her run.

The 41-year-old skiing icon, who hadn’t competed in six years, crashed only 13 seconds after leaving the start gate during the women’s downhill final in Cortina. What was supposed to be a unbelievable comeback instantly turned into a terrifying scene as Vonn lost control, flipped, and hit the icy slope hard.

Spectators went silent as she lay motionless on the mountain. Emergency crews rushed in, and moments later she was airlifted to a nearby hospital while crying out in pain.

What makes the whole situation even more unbelievable is that Vonn was racing with a ruptured ACL — an injury she suffered just nine days ago in training. Most athletes would have been sidelined for months, but Vonn insisted on giving her Olympic dream one more shot.

But once she cleared the second corner, things spiraled fast. She picked up speed over a hill, veered off her line, clipped a plastic course marker, and was thrown violently to the ground. Her skis never released, leaving her body twisted and clearly suffering.

Witnesses said the sound of her sobbing could be heard from down the slope as medics surrounded her.

The American star has not spoken publicly since the crash, and her condition has not yet been updated.

The Winter Olympics continue through February 22 — but Vonn’s long-shot comeback attempt has ended in the most devastating way imaginable.
