President Donald Trump turned heads in New Jersey on Friday — and this time, it wasn’t because of anything he said.

The 80-year-old president stepped off Air Force One at Morristown Municipal Airport on Sept. 4 sporting noticeably darker, tousled hair and what appeared to be a dramatic change to his trademark comb-over.

Trump’s familiar side part also appeared to have switched directions, quickly setting off a wave of speculation and jokes online. Photos from the arrival were taken by Reuters photographer Eric Lee.

“What in the world is going on with Trump’s hair?” journalist Aaron Rupar wrote on X.

Another social media user wondered whether the president had gotten “a new wig,” while the anti-Trump group Republicans Against Trump circulated the image with the caption, “Yes, this is a real photo of Trump.”

The unexpected makeover came just one day after Trump publicly addressed a subject that has followed him for decades — whether his famous hairstyle is entirely his own.

Speaking in the White House Rose Garden on Thursday, Trump flatly declared, “I don’t wear a wig.”

Trump then pointed to a brutally windy campaign rally in Ohio in March 2024 as evidence.

The president recalled standing outside near Dayton International Airport during a rally for Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno as powerful winds whipped around the stage.

“You know, for years, I had to suffer with people saying, ‘He wears a wig,’” Trump said. “I don’t wear a wig.”

Trump argued that the weather that night proved his point, saying that if he had been wearing a wig, “it was not gonna be on your head very long.” He wore a MAGA hat during the Ohio appearance.

But the renewed attention surrounding Trump’s hair comes as biographer Michael Wolff makes another unusual claim about what allegedly goes into maintaining the president’s signature look.

Speaking on the Inside Trump’s Head podcast, Wolff claimed Trump travels with what he described as a hair “patch kit.”

According to Wolff, the kit allegedly includes small tufts of hair designed to match Trump’s current hair color. Wolff claimed the pieces can be attached using some form of paste, although he said he does not know who is responsible for applying them.

Wolff joked that whoever handles Trump’s hair maintenance travels so close to the president that the person is practically “next to the people with the nuclear codes.”

He further claimed the alleged system dates back to Trump’s first term in office.

“The maintenance of this hair is a major enterprise and has been for many years,” Wolff said.

Trump has repeatedly denied wearing a wig, and Wolff’s claims have not been independently verified.

The White House had not publicly responded to the allegations when the original report was published.

Whatever caused Friday’s dramatically different look, Trump’s latest hairstyle managed to do something few presidential makeovers can — become a political story all by itself.
