As President Donald Trump enters the second year of his stunning political comeback, First Lady Melania Trump is trying to stage her own media revival—with a high-gloss Amazon documentary that’s already being roasted before its release.

The upcoming film, simply titled Melania, is set to premiere worldwide on January 30 through Amazon MGM Studios. But if the internet is any indication, the PR gamble is backfiring.

“Did anybody ask for this?” wrote one X user. “This is going to flop harder than your sh–coin,” another added—referring to a failed Trump-branded cryptocurrency that collapsed in late 2024.

The documentary promises an intimate look at Melania Trump’s 20-day transition back to the White House after her husband’s narrow 2024 win over former Vice President Kamala Harris. It includes never-before-seen footage of the First Lady supervising inaugural planning, redecorating the East Wing, and relocating her family to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue once again.

But a teaser trailer released last month did little to warm public opinion.

In one widely mocked scene, Melania calls Donald Trump after his televised win. “Hi Mr. President. Congratulations,” she says flatly. When Trump asks if she watched the results come in, she replies, “I did not. I will see it on the news.”

“Unintentionally hilarious,” posted one user. “It’s like a robot giving an Oscar speech to a toaster.”

The film’s release through Amazon, a company once publicly derided by Trump as part of the “fake news tech elite,” raised eyebrows among political commentators and media watchdogs.

“It’s ironic,” said Stanford media ethicist Carla Jin. “Amazon is distributing a highly sympathetic film about Melania Trump—less than a year after Trump declared war on Big Tech during his second campaign. It feels like everyone is cashing in.”

Political strategists are also split on the film’s intent. Some view it as an effort to reshape Melania’s frosty public image ahead of a possible 2028 Trump family succession bid—especially as son Barron Trump’s name increasingly circulates in conservative youth circles.

“It’s damage control disguised as documentary,” said Democratic strategist Leo Ramirez. “They’re selling Melania as some modern-day Jackie O while the country burns.”

Melania announced the film’s international poster—featuring her posed solemnly in a black-and-white power suit—on social media Sunday. Her post, captioned “MELANIA. WORLDWIDE. January 30. Only In Theaters,” quickly sparked ridicule.

“Another Trump family grift,” one commenter wrote. Others labeled it “propaganda,” “shameless,” and “as robotic as her husband’s debate prep.”

Even longtime Trump critics aren’t convinced the doc will resonate.

“I get wanting to control your own narrative,” said former White House correspondent Kayla Mayers. “But this looks like an infomercial for someone who doesn’t even want the job.”

The film arrives at a fragile moment for the Trump administration. Amid ongoing international tensions, sweeping domestic protests over abortion and immigration, and federal investigations into 2024 election interference, critics see Melania as the kind of insulated vanity project that further disconnects the First Family from everyday Americans.

“There’s a growing perception that while people are struggling, the Trumps are staging a second term photo-op,” said Ramirez. “This doc might only cement that.”

Still, Amazon appears all-in. Melania will premiere globally in select theaters, with a limited streaming rollout expected in late spring.

Whether Americans tune in—or tune out—remains to be seen.
