President Donald Trump turned the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw into his own personal dance floor Friday night — and even gave First Lady Melania Trump a public nudge to “come on” and join him.
The 79-year-old commander-in-chief, who received the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize at the John F. Kennedy Center, was filmed grooving to “YMCA” by the Village People — the same disco anthem that became a rally favorite during his first presidency.
When the familiar beat kicked in, Trump began swaying, pointing, and clapping along, visibly delighted. Lip reader Jeremy Freeman told reporters that Trump turned to FIFA President Gianni Infantino and beamed, “Gianni, this makes me happy — I missed them so much.”
Moments later, he leaned toward Melania and said, “Look at it, great job.” Then came the moment that had social media buzzing — a playful “Come on, join in,” directed at the first lady, who smiled politely but stayed seated.
“He really looked like he was having fun,” Freeman told reporters. “You could tell it wasn’t staged. He genuinely loves that song.”
Trump’s dancing came shortly after receiving the FIFA Peace Prize — an honor created to recognize “global efforts toward unity through sport.” The former president praised the award as “one of the great honors of my life.”
“We saved millions and millions of lives,” Trump declared in his acceptance speech. “We ended wars before they even started. The world is safer now — and the United States is leading again.”
Infantino lauded Trump’s “unwavering commitment to advancing peace and unity throughout the world,” a statement that drew a mix of applause and raised eyebrows across social media.
While supporters online hailed Trump’s “return to optimism,” critics pointed out the irony of the prize being awarded just months after his administration’s controversial withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords 2.0 and escalating tensions with Iran.
“FIFA giving Trump a peace prize is like giving a fox an award for chicken safety,” Democratic strategist Erin Morrow joked on X (formerly Twitter).
Still, even detractors couldn’t deny the viral moment that followed. Within hours, clips of Trump’s dance racked up millions of views on TikTok, with one user captioning it, “Grandpa’s still got the groove — and the presidency.”
The star-studded ceremony featured performances from Robbie Williams and Lauryn Hill, while celebrities including Kevin Hart, Heidi Klum, and Bad Bunny were spotted in the audience.
In typical Trump fashion, he couldn’t resist riffing on the NFL, telling the crowd, “We’ve got to find another name for the NFL. This is real football. It doesn’t make sense that we call it soccer here.”
Victor Willis of the Village People, who performed at Trump’s 2025 inauguration, defended the president’s love for “YMCA.” Speaking to Fox & Friends last year, Willis said Trump “genuinely enjoys” the record and “brings joy to people when he plays it.”
For Trump, the night wasn’t just about the prize — it was about the performance. From the dance floor to the diplomatic stage, he once again managed to dominate the spotlight.
“Whether you love him or hate him,” political analyst Sabrina O’Donnell said, “Trump knows how to make a scene — and in 2025, he’s still the headline act.”
