The Cal State Fullerton community is heartbroken after the death of 19-year-old soccer standout Lauren Turner, who passed away six weeks after a horrific e-scooter crash left her in a coma.
Turner and her teammate Ashlyn Gwynn were riding scooters near campus on September 27 when a box truck struck them, leaving both athletes severely injured. Turner never regained consciousness and died on November 7 surrounded by family.
“Early this morning, our sweet Lauren fell asleep in the Lord,” her family shared in a heartbreaking GoFundMe update. “We will miss her beyond measure, yet we take comfort knowing she’s now in the loving embrace of our Lord and Savior.”
Friends and teammates described the Tustin, California native as “funny, full of life,” and someone whose laughter “could light up any locker room.” Her family said she “approached everything she did with heart and joy,” adding that her faith and positivity touched everyone she met.
Turner’s teammate Gwynn has been slowly recovering and was recently moved out of intensive care. The women’s soccer team honored both players throughout the season by wearing wristbands with their initials — LT5 and AG7 — a quiet tribute that carried through every game.
“She was the first to celebrate other people’s wins,” her teammates wrote in a statement. “Lauren was the true definition of compassion, kindness, and happiness. We love you, Lauren — our No. 5 forever.”
The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Police say drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.
A candlelight vigil for Turner will be held Wednesday night at Cal State Fullerton’s soccer stadium, where teammates and fans plan to celebrate her life, her faith, and the joy she brought to the field.
