In a scathing takedown that’s sure to reignite tensions in Washington, former Vice President Kamala Harris slammed President Donald Trump for what she calls a calculated campaign of “gaslighting” the American public — one designed to distract from his administration’s stunning lack of real policy.
Appearing on The Diary of a CEO podcast this week, Harris unloaded on the 45th and now 47th president, accusing him of using chaos, cruelty, and outright lies as a substitute for governing.
“There’s a whole lot of gaslighting happening,” Harris said bluntly. “Misdirection. Scapegoating. Outright lying. It’s become his brand.”
Harris, who faced off with Trump during the heated 2024 election cycle, said her campaign staff warned her early on: Trump wasn’t going to run on policy — he was going to run on provocation.
One moment still sticks with her: during their televised debate, Trump brought up an outlandish rumor that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were “eating family pets” — a completely debunked hoax that originated from far-right message boards.
“I said, ‘There’s no way he’ll bring that up,’” Harris recalled. “But sure enough — he did. Right there on the national stage.”
That, she said, is the Trump playbook: create chaos, say the unthinkable, and keep the media—and the voters—focused on outrage instead of inflation, healthcare, or the rising cost of living.
“It’s always some outrageous comment that draws attention. Meanwhile, where’s the plan to lower grocery prices? To fix housing? There isn’t one.”
In recent months, Trump has ramped up his rhetoric on immigration, calling for mass deportations and pushing to militarize the southern border. But according to Harris, the policies aren’t just extreme — they’re failing.
“They’re even picking up citizens, not just undocumented folks,” she said. “Hardworking people being caught in these mass raids while the President plays the blame game.”
Harris added that Trump’s harsh immigration moves, combined with his ongoing attacks on the press, women, and public education, are creating a fog of disinformation that leaves voters overwhelmed and confused.
“Trying to cut through it with facts and reason? It’s like shouting into a hurricane of lies.”
Podcast host Steven Bartlett noted Trump’s obsessive use of nicknames—“Sleepy Joe,” “Crooked Hillary,” and more recently, “Nervous Kamala.” But Harris wasn’t laughing.
“Don’t discount that,” she warned. “It sticks. It’s branding. But what’s behind it? Nothing. No ideas, no solutions.”
With consumer prices still surging and middle-class families feeling the pinch, Harris believes Americans may soon hit their breaking point.
“When parents go shopping for Christmas and realize just how much is imported from China—and how expensive everything’s become—it might finally click,” she said. “That this administration isn’t helping working people. It’s hurting them.”
The former VP closed with a warning for Democrats and independents alike: staying silent isn’t an option.
“It spreads like wildfire. The lies. The memes. The slogans,” Harris said. “But we have to stay relentless. We have to drag the conversation back to reality.”
Bottom line: As Trump gears up for a reelection campaign unlike any in American history, Kamala Harris says it’s time to stop playing defense — and start calling the chaos exactly what it is.
“It’s gaslighting,” she said. “And it’s got to stop.”
