Vice President JD Vance’s attempt to laugh with the internet instead of being laughed at went horribly wrong this Halloween—reigniting fierce backlash from critics who see his antics as out of touch, tone-deaf, and deeply unserious at a time of national unrest.

In a TikTok video posted late Thursday, Vance appeared wearing a bald cap and a juvenile smirk, mocking the now-infamous “Babyface Vance” meme that has haunted him since last year.

“Happy Halloween, kids, and remember—say thank you,” Vance quipped in the clip, spinning dramatically to the eerie tones of The Twilight Zone theme, mimicking the very meme he once tried to ignore.

But what the Trump administration likely hoped would come across as self-deprecating humor instead triggered a digital firestorm.

The official Democratic Party X (formerly Twitter) account was among the first to strike back, reposting the video with the caption: “POV you’re a brand new IKEA sectional”—a sharp jab at long-standing rumors about Vance’s bizarre obsession with couches.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has emerged as one of Trump’s fiercest West Coast adversaries, didn’t mince words either. Responding to Vance’s meme post that asked, “Can you hear the screaming?” Newsom replied:
“Yeah—it’s children running through strawberry fields to escape your goons.”

The comment was a scathing reference to recent federal immigration raids across California, which saw National Guard troops and U.S. Marines deployed to sanctuary cities—despite strong objections from state and local leaders.

“This is posted by the perpetually online full-time troll who also happens to be Vice President of the United States,” wrote Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of progressive watchdog outlet MeidasTouch.

The “Babyface Vance” meme, which depicts the Ohio senator-turned-vice president with puffed-up cheeks and a digitally shaved head, first exploded in October 2024 after his condescending demand that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “say thank you” for U.S. military aid.

That phrase—“say thank you”—has since become a mocking rallying cry used by critics across the political spectrum.

One version of the meme was even plastered on the side of a van that followed Vance through the English countryside during a controversial vacation in the Cotswolds, drawing local protest. In a bizarre twist, a Norwegian tourist claimed he was denied entry into the U.S. simply for having the image on his phone.

The meme’s reach hit new levels in March 2025, when South Park parodied the Trump White House with a recurring “Tattoo”-style character inspired by Vance’s digitally altered likeness.

In a scene now widely shared online, a cartoonish Vance waddles behind a blustering President Trump in the Oval Office, squeaking out, “Boss, the immigrants are coming!”

Even Elon Musk, who has grown increasingly cozy with the Trump-Vance ticket since acquiring the platform formerly known as Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, couldn’t resist weighing in—dropping a single laughing emoji on Vance’s post.

Democratic strategist Alicia Torres told The Hillline, “When families are being torn apart in ICE raids, when reproductive rights are under siege, and when American soldiers are being deployed for political optics—this is what our vice president is doing? Making TikToks?”

“Vance thinks he’s winning the meme war,” she added. “But what he’s really doing is handing ammunition to every critic who says this administration governs like it’s running a fan page for itself.”

While Trump remains silent on the controversy—busy preparing for a Florida rally this weekend—Vance appears to be doubling down, reposting fan-made versions of his Halloween costume with fire emojis and the hashtag #BabyfaceBrigade.

Political commentator Jamal Hart from MSNBC summed it up bluntly:
“This administration has turned governing into a cosplay. JD Vance went from author of Hillbilly Elegy to Vice President of Cringe.”

For now, the Babyface meme lives on—and it seems JD Vance is no longer running from it. He’s chasing it. The problem is, the internet is running faster.
