In one of the most explosive podcast episodes of the election season, former Bravo personality Jennifer Welch and Democratic strategist Tommy Vietor unloaded on Vice President J.D. Vance, accusing him of being a self-loathing, closeted gay man who uses Christian fundamentalism as political camouflage.

“He’s a failed drag queen,” Welch declared on her I’ve Had It podcast. “He wanted to be fabulous and couldn’t hack it. So he went off to Peter Thiel’s gay boot camp and came back a sociopathic queer-eyed freak show. He’d be so much cooler if he’d just come out.”

The comments come as Vance, once a venture capitalist and author, has become the evangelical face of President Trump’s second administration, pushing hard-right policies rooted in religion, including a new proposal to restrict federal funding for schools that teach “non-traditional gender ideology.”

Welch said her critique wasn’t just about Vance. She proposed an entire theory: “I think there’s a group of DL [down low] demon queens in the MAGA movement. They rage against gay rights all day long and then hop on Grindr at night.”

She pointed to House Speaker Mike Johnson as another example, calling him “a nut evangelical” obsessed with Christian supremacy while allegedly battling his own desires.

“It’s projection. They’re repressing something, and it comes out as cruelty,” said Pod Save America host Tommy Vietor, who joined Welch in the episode. “It’s the oldest political trick in the book—lash out at the part of yourself you’re most afraid of.”

Vance, now 41, has shared awkward anecdotes from his past that critics say highlight the dissonance between his personal life and his political posturing. In his memoir Hillbilly Elegy, Vance wrote about thinking he might be gay as a child after hearing a preacher rail against homosexuality.

“At the time, the only thing I knew about gay men was that they preferred men to women,” he wrote. “This described me perfectly: I disliked girls, and my best friend in the world was my buddy Bill. Oh no, I’m going to hell.”

When he asked his grandmother about it, she responded, “Don’t be a f—ing idiot. How would you know that you’re gay?” Then, according to Vance, she added, “Do you want to suck d—s?”

Though he denied it and said no, she reassured him: “Then you’re not gay. And even if you did want to suck d—s, that would be okay. God would still love you.”

That moment, Vance has said, taught him tolerance. But critics say his political career tells another story.

Since entering politics, Vance has consistently aligned with the religious right. He opposed the Respect for Marriage Act, criticized Pride celebrations as “moral degeneracy,” and helped roll back protections for LGBTQ students under the Department of Education.

“J.D. Vance is the walking contradiction of the Trump era,” said DNC strategist Ava Moreno. “He writes about compassion and tolerance in his book, but then supports policies that demonize queer kids. That’s not just hypocrisy—it’s cruelty.”

Welch and Vietor’s rage wasn’t just personal—it was political.

“I’ve had it with getting beat by the biggest f—ing losers on the planet,” Vietor said. “We’ve let this repressed, angry movement take over the narrative. MAGA isn’t cool. It’s dangerous.”

Welch added: “We cannot lose our democracy to these f—ing dorks. These are not the people who should be setting cultural policy.”

Critics say the latest comments reflect growing frustration within the Democratic base as the 2026 midterms approach. With Trump riding high in approval among Republicans and Vance serving as his sharp-elbowed attack dog, Democrats are being urged to stop playing defense.

“There’s a reason this stuff lands,” said LGBTQ advocate Jordan Reyes. “Because people see through the act. When you legislate against people you resemble, that’s not morality—that’s shame weaponized.”

As for the Vice President? He’s remained silent on the podcast controversy. But the internet hasn’t.
