White House moment blurs the line between journalism and diplomacy as Trump and Zelensky entertain bizarre “Tomahawk-for-drones” idea
What began as a routine press briefing inside the White House on Friday turned into a diplomatic spectacle when Fox News reporter Peter Doocy appeared to accidentally insert himself into an international arms negotiation — on live television.
The surreal exchange unfolded as President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for high-stakes peace talks aimed at ending the years-long conflict with Russia. Trump, fresh off celebrating his ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, invited Zelensky to Washington to discuss a broader European security agreement.
But in the middle of the briefing, the conversation swerved into strange territory. Zelensky, speaking in English, proposed a trade: American Tomahawk missiles in exchange for Ukrainian-made combat drones. “We can work together and strengthen American production,” Zelensky said, calling the potential deal “mutually beneficial.”
Doocy, Fox’s Senior White House Correspondent, jumped in — apparently trying to clarify the offer. Instead, he found himself brokering the exchange in real time.
“If you okay Tomahawks to Ukraine, what happens if the U.S. is in a conflict and needs them?” he asked Trump.
Trump grinned. “We need Tomahawks and a lot of other things that we’ve been sending over for the last four years,” he said. “Hopefully they won’t need them. Hopefully we can end the war without even thinking about Tomahawks.”
That’s when Doocy pressed again — this time summarizing the terms like a middleman: “So, just to be clear, you’re suggesting a trade — U.S. Tomahawks for Ukrainian drones?”
“Yes, of course,” Zelensky replied.
Doocy paused, almost realizing the absurdity of what he was doing. “Mr. President,” he said with a nervous laugh, “I don’t mean to be brokering an arms deal here, but is that something you’d be interested in?”
Trump didn’t miss a beat. “We are, yeah,” he replied before veering into one of his familiar monologues about “beautiful American jets” and “the best technology in the world.”
The press room reportedly fell silent for several seconds before aides steered the event back on script.
Even by Trump-era standards, the spectacle was bizarre — a journalist appearing to facilitate an arms negotiation between two heads of state.
“This was one of those moments where you could feel every diplomat in the room cringe,” said one European reporter present at the event. “It was like watching a policy accident happen in real time.”
Fox News has not commented on the exchange, though the clip has already gone viral on social media, with critics mocking Doocy for “going from press corps to Pentagon.”
Before the awkward “deal-making,” Doocy had already been trying to steer the Ukrainian president toward partisan praise. “What do you see as the biggest difference in diplomacy between Trump and Biden?” he asked.
Zelensky, careful not to offend, responded diplomatically: “President Trump has a big chance now to finish this war. President Biden is not the president, so he doesn’t have that chance.”
That answer delighted Trump, who quickly interjected. “I would say the biggest difference is one is extremely competent and the other is grossly incompetent,” he said, drawing laughter from some of his aides.
The episode underscored how Trump’s second term has blurred traditional lines — not just between policy and politics, but between journalism and performance.
As one former diplomat told Reuters after the event, “This isn’t diplomacy — it’s television.”
