An 86-year-old driver suffering from a possible medical emergency plowed his SUV into three pedestrians on a Brooklyn sidewalk Wednesday afternoon, killing an 89-year-old woman and injuring two others, police said.
The tragic crash happened around 12:51 p.m. near Neptune Avenue and West 6th Street in Coney Island. Authorities say the elderly motorist suddenly reversed his Chrysler Town and Country minivan, jumped the curb, and struck the victims on the sidewalk.
“I saw the man back up and knock them down, and I started screaming,” a witness told Pix 11. “As I came closer, I recognized one of the women. It could’ve been me.”
Emergency responders rushed to the scene. The 89-year-old woman was transported to NYU Langone Hospital but did not survive. The other two victims — a 43-year-old woman and a 75-year-old woman — were taken to Maimonides Medical Center and are in stable condition.
“They were all bloody. It was a mess,” the witness added. “One woman was yelling in excruciating pain.”
The driver stayed at the scene and was later hospitalized at Maimonides, where he’s listed in stable condition. Sources told The New York Post the man may have suffered a stroke at the time of the crash.
No charges have been filed at this time, and the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to look into the fatal incident.
