Iowa is mourning the loss of State Senator Claire Celsi, who passed away Monday at the age of 59. Her death was announced through a heartfelt social media post from her daughter and followed by tributes from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Celsi had been receiving hospice care since September 18 and had stopped seeking curative treatment for an undisclosed medical condition. Though she had been battling health issues for months, she made a determined return to the Iowa Capitol after undergoing surgery in April, resuming her duties during the 2025 legislative session.

First elected to the Iowa Senate in 2018, and reelected in 2022, Celsi represented Senate District 16. She served as a Senate Democratic assistant leader in 2024 and was the ranking member of the Senate Government Oversight Committee during the 2025 session.

Fellow lawmakers remembered her as a tireless advocate, especially for vulnerable Iowans.

“I cannot begin to express how deeply saddened I am by the passing of our Senate colleague and my good friend Claire Celsi,” said Iowa Senate Democratic Leader Janice Weiner. “She was a fearless advocate and truthteller for women, the elderly, and public education. Improving the quality of life for Iowans in nursing homes became her signature issue. Claire was a voice for the voiceless.”

Rita Hart, chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, echoed those sentiments, describing Celsi as a “fierce advocate” for causes ranging from worker protections and public education to water quality and mental health care.

House Minority Leader Brian Meyer praised her dedication to public service and pledged to carry on the work she was passionate about. “As we mourn the loss of a dedicated leader, we also resolve to carry forward the causes she held dear,” he said.

Republican leaders also paid their respects. Senate Majority Leader Mike Klimesh noted that, “Senator Claire Celsi was a dedicated public servant, a passionate advocate of her beliefs, and worked hard to represent the constituents of her district.”

Senate President Amy Sinclair said Celsi’s passing, “while not unexpected, is no less heartbreaking,” and praised her dedication to service even through personal health challenges.

Governor Kim Reynolds offered her condolences, calling Celsi “an impassioned voice for Central Iowa constituents” and recognizing her return to work during her illness as a sign of her deep commitment. “Our family is praying for Claire’s loved ones at this time,” the governor said.

A special election will be held to fill the Senate seat, making it the sixth legislative special election in Iowa this year.
