A Sunday morning of worship turned into a nightmare in Grand Blanc, Michigan, when gunfire erupted inside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, leaving multiple victims before a massive fire consumed the sanctuary.

Authorities confirmed the suspected shooter is dead. But as black smoke poured from the burning structure, emergency crews were battling not only flames but reports of entrapments and a partial building collapse.

“This is the kind of horror you never expect in your own community,” said Lisa Raymond, a Grand Blanc resident who lives two blocks from the church. “First we heard shots, then the sirens, then the smoke. People ran out screaming.”

The Grand Blanc Police Department said the church quickly became engulfed after the attack, forcing firefighters into a desperate fifth-alarm response. Genesee Township Fire Operations told Newsweek that multiple teams rushed to pull survivors from the rubble as the blaze intensified.

Social media videos captured towering plumes of smoke and panicked parishioners hugging in the parking lot. Police have since declared there is no ongoing threat to the public, though officials have not released a confirmed count of injuries.

With families separated in the chaos, police established a temporary reunification site at a nearby pavilion, later moving operations to Trillium Theater at Holly and McCandlish.

“Parents are trying to find children, people are desperately asking about loved ones,” said volunteer coordinator Marco DeLeon. “We’re trying to bring some order to a terrible situation.”

The tragedy unfolds against a backdrop of rising gun violence in places of worship across America. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, mass shootings in religious settings have doubled in the last five years. Security experts warn that faith communities remain vulnerable despite increased calls for tighter gun laws.

President Trump, who has continued to resist Democratic demands for sweeping gun reform, has not yet commented on the Michigan tragedy. White House aides said he was briefed on the situation Sunday afternoon.

“This is another reminder that America’s churches, mosques, and synagogues are not immune to the epidemic of violence,” said Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI). “We cannot allow this cycle to continue.”

By midday, dozens of families gathered outside the theater-turned-reunification center, some clinging to hope, others bracing for devastating news.

“It’s hard to believe this could happen in Grand Blanc,” said David Nielson, a local high school teacher. “We come here to worship, not to die.”

Authorities said the investigation is still in its early stages. The identities of the victims and the shooter have not yet been released.

  1. Only idiots use the idiotic Democrats’ idiotic term of “gun violence”, those of us with working brains know it’s “ADDICTIONS VIOLENCE” by people stoned on drug addiction, religion addiction, homosexuality addiction, trans addiction, greed addiction, etc… no matter what ‘tool’ is used such as knife, club, auto, plane, etc…
