A man who once appeared on country music’s biggest stage beside singer Kellie Pickler is now at the center of a horrifying mass shooting in North Carolina.

The accused gunman, 39-year-old Nigel Edge, is no stranger to headlines. More than a decade ago, he went by the name Sgt. Sean DeBevoise, a decorated Marine wounded during his 2006 deployment to Iraq. In 2012, he was famously photographed escorting American Idol alum Pickler to the CMT Music Awards.

“Me and my date (Sgt. Sean DeBevoise) #CMTawards,” Pickler proudly posted on X at the time, alongside a picture of the smiling pair.

DeBevoise himself told Taste of Country in a red-carpet interview that night: “I am ecstatic about being here at the CMT Music Awards with Kellie. She is the most sincere person I know. She is an angel.”

But the fairytale moment didn’t last. Court documents later revealed that the same night he accused Pickler of trying to poison him with a glass of Jim Beam—a bizarre allegation that foreshadowed darker years ahead.

Fast-forward to this past Saturday: Authorities say Edge, now living under his new name, opened fire inside the American Fish Company saloon in the quiet coastal town of Southport.

The attack left three people dead and at least eight wounded. Witnesses described a chaotic scene of panic and bloodshed on the waterfront, where families had gathered for a weekend night out.

“It was targeted. He was acting alone,” Southport Police Chief Todd Coring confirmed at a press conference. “We are still investigating the motive.”

Edge now faces three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. Police sources say the investigation is ongoing, with no immediate indication of why the former Marine chose to unleash violence on a crowded dockside bar.

Local residents say the massacre has shattered their sense of safety. “This is the kind of place where nothing like this ever happens,” one Southport fisherman told reporters. “Now people are afraid to even come out at night.”

Once hailed as a wounded hero and celebrated guest at a glittering awards show, Edge’s fall into infamy has stunned both the country music world and his former Marine brothers.

“He had demons, but no one saw this coming,” said a fellow veteran who served with him in Iraq. “It’s heartbreaking to see someone go from a hero on the battlefield to this.”
