Roadside Hero Killed While Helping Stranded Driver

A Norfolk mechanic was struck and killed while rescuing a stranded motorist on a busy highway — leaving behind four children, a heartbroken partner, and a devastated community.

Authorities say Ryan Balls, 37, was fatally hit by a black Ford Puma ST on Sunday afternoon while working on the A11 dual carriageway near Besthorpe, about 15 miles outside Norwich. Despite an air ambulance rushing to the scene, the father of four was pronounced dead at the roadside.

The driver, a teenager, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. Police confirmed he has since been released on bail while investigations continue.

Ryan’s partner, Sophie Bailey, said she couldn’t let official reports reduce him to “a man who was standing outside a vehicle.”

“Ryan was working, doing the job he was passionate about — recovering a broken-down car and helping someone stranded on the A11,” she wrote in an emotional post. “He went out that day, as he always did, to help people in need and to make the road safer for everyone. On Sunday, he never came home.”

Through tears, she added: “Our children have lost their dad, and I have lost my soulmate. His mum has lost her oldest son. Nothing will ever take away our pain, but Ryan deserves to be remembered for the life he gave in service to others.”

Friends say Ryan ran RB Autos, an independent breakdown and repair service based in Diss, Norfolk. Known for his tireless work ethic, he often juggled long days on the road with caring for his two young sons and two stepchildren who called him “dad.”

“He was a fantastic man,” one close family friend told reporters. “He lived for his kids, and he lived to help others.”

Ryan’s mother, Judith, 63, has faced multiple tragedies in recent years — losing her husband in 2023, followed by her sister and mother. Now, the death of her eldest son has left her reeling once again.

In her tribute, Sophie Bailey urged drivers to think twice before speeding past roadside workers.

“Please, if you read this, remember people like Ryan who put themselves in dangerous situations to keep others safe. Slow down, pay attention, and always think about the families behind those hi-vis jackets,” she said.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral costs and support Ryan’s children. The organizer wrote: “Ryan was not only a beloved father, brother, and son, but also a cherished friend to so many. His sudden loss has left an unfillable void. Every donation, every share, and every message of love makes a difference.”
