What was supposed to be a glamorous, high-powered evening inside Washington’s newest elite social hub turned into a full-blown political spectacle last week, exposing deep fractures inside President Donald Trump’s inner circle.
According to multiple sources, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte nearly came to physical blows during a private dinner on September 3 at The Executive Branch, an exclusive Georgetown club that’s quickly become a playground for Trump loyalists, Wall Street power brokers, and MAGA influencers.
The event was intended to celebrate both the club’s inaugural dinner and the birthday of conservative venture capitalist and MAGA podcast host Chamath Palihapitiya. But witnesses say the mood soured quickly when Bessent confronted Pulte over rumors that Pulte had been “badmouthing” him directly to Trump.
Several attendees told reporters they were stunned by Bessent’s outburst. According to one eyewitness, the Treasury chief stormed across the room, pointed a finger at Pulte, and exploded:
“Why the f— are you talking to the president about me? F— you. I’m gonna punch you in your f—ing face.”
Pulte, visibly shocked, reportedly asked, “To do what? To talk?”
Bessent shot back:
“No. I’m going to f—ing beat your a–.”
Guests at the dinner — which also included Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Medicare and Medicaid chief Mehmet Oz — described the confrontation as “unhinged” and “bonkers.”
Three witnesses confirmed that Omeed Malik, the financier behind The Executive Branch, rushed in to deescalate the situation. But sources say even Malik wasn’t spared Bessent’s fury.
Bessent allegedly gave Malik an ultimatum:
“It’s either me or him. You tell me who’s getting the f— out of here. Or we can go outside.”
The tension was so high that Malik ultimately separated the men and arranged for them to sit at opposite ends of the long dining table.
Insiders say this wasn’t an isolated blowup — it’s the latest chapter in an ongoing turf war between Pulte and Bessent over the privatization of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-backed mortgage giants that have become a central pillar of Trump’s 2025 economic agenda.
Back in May, Trump personally ordered Bessent, Pulte, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to collaborate on a sweeping plan to hand control of the housing finance market back to private investors. But sources say Pulte has recently taken the lead, sidelining Bessent — and fueling simmering resentment.
One senior administration official, speaking on background, said:
“This isn’t just about bruised egos. There’s a massive amount of money and political capital at stake. Everyone wants to be the one who delivers Trump his big housing win before 2026.”
The near-violent exchange underscores growing dysfunction within Trump’s economic team at a critical moment. With the housing market still reeling from record-high interest rates and affordability crises, Democrats have warned that Trump’s privatization plan could destabilize the economy even further.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) blasted the administration’s handling of Fannie and Freddie in a statement Friday:
“While President Trump’s team is busy threatening each other at fancy dinners, working families are being crushed by rising rents and mortgage costs. This chaos is exactly why we need strong oversight — not backroom deals.”
Despite the drama, the dinner proceeded without further incident — though sources tell us the tension between Bessent and Pulte is far from resolved.
As one insider put it bluntly:
“This administration is one bad dinner away from a full-on civil war.”
