President Donald Trump’s erratic schedule and late-night social media rants have long sparked concern, but now his own vice president is sounding the alarm about the commander-in-chief’s extreme sleep deprivation.
In a revealing interview with Fox News on Saturday, Vice President JD Vance admitted that Trump, 79, “doesn’t have an off switch.”
“One thing I’ve learned working with him every day,” Vance said, “is that he’ll call you at 12:30 or 2:00 in the morning, and then again at 6:00 a.m. about a totally different topic. Sometimes I ask him, ‘Mr. President, did you even sleep last night?’”
Health experts say Trump’s routine is deeply concerning. At nearly 80, most adults need seven to nine hours of rest per night, according to the National Institute on Aging. Chronic sleep deprivation in older adults has been linked to cognitive decline, mood disorders, and increased risks of heart disease and stroke.
Instead, Trump’s aides say he often gets as little as four hours of sleep, spending his nights drafting executive orders, watching cable news, and — most visibly — launching provocative Truth Social posts.
“This isn’t sustainable for anyone, let alone someone making decisions that affect hundreds of millions of people,” Dr. Andrew Klein, a Washington-based geriatric specialist, told us. “Sleep isn’t optional. Cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and cardiovascular health all decline rapidly without it.”
Trump’s nocturnal habits come amid growing speculation about his overall health. In recent weeks, the president has been photographed with swollen calves, bruised hands, and difficulty walking — fueling rumors on social media that he had secretly suffered a medical emergency.
Those rumors intensified last week after Trump vanished from public view for four days, prompting hashtags like #WhereIsTrump and #DeadOrAlive to trend on X (formerly Twitter).
Trump eventually reappeared online at 3:12 a.m. Monday, unleashing a barrage of 19 posts in under an hour, including an all-caps declaration:
“I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE!”
White House physicians later attributed his swelling to chronic venous insufficiency, a condition common among older adults where veins struggle to return blood to the heart. As for the bruising, aides blamed “frequent handshakes” and “aspirin use” — explanations that have done little to quiet speculation.
The early-morning hours have become Trump’s most active window. His Truth Social sprees often veer into threats and bizarre imagery.
Just this Saturday, before 5:30 p.m., he posted an AI-generated image depicting himself as a war hero from Apocalypse Now while warning he was prepared to “declare war” on the city of Chicago if Democratic leaders didn’t “restore law and order.”
Senate Democrats quickly condemned the statement, calling it “reckless” and “unhinged.”
“Chicago isn’t a war zone,” Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth said. “The president of the United States should not be threatening American cities. This isn’t leadership — it’s chaos.”
Behind closed doors, White House insiders are reportedly growing uneasy. While aides publicly insist Trump is “healthy and energetic,” Vance’s candid remarks have reignited concerns about the president’s ability to endure another three years in office.
“Working for him is like working in a constant state of adrenaline,” one senior official told us on background. “He sleeps four hours, eats fast food at 2 a.m., and wakes up ready to fight. But the human body has limits — and so does the presidency.”
For now, Trump’s base remains unwavering. But as his schedule grows more erratic, and his late-night posting sprees get more extreme, even some longtime allies are quietly asking the question no one wants to say out loud:
How long can a sleep-deprived, nearly 80-year-old president keep running the country?
