Mark Teixeira, the former New York Yankees slugger who helped deliver the team’s 2009 World Series championship, is stepping up to the political plate — and Democrats are already bracing for another Trump-aligned athlete entering Congress.

The 44-year-old baseball hero announced his run for Texas’s 21st congressional district on Wednesday, framing himself as a “lifelong conservative” ready to “fight for the principles that make Texas and America great.” The seat, currently held by Rep. Chip Roy, is opening up as Roy launches his own controversial bid to replace scandal-plagued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Teixeira, a five-time Gold Glove winner and three-time Silver Slugger, is leaning heavily on his baseball fame to rally support. But Democrats warn his platform mirrors the hardline policies driving Trump’s second-term agenda.

On his campaign website, Teixeira vows to “secure the border,” push sweeping education reforms to “end radical woke indoctrination,” and expand the state’s reliance on DOGE — a proposed economic initiative backed by MAGA-aligned think tanks. He also pledges to fight for congressional term limits, echoing talking points popular within Trump’s Republican base.

In a 2024 panel hosted by the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation, Teixeira hinted at his political ambitions. “I believe God called me to do more than hit a baseball,” he said at the time. “We need leaders who will defend family, faith, and freedom.”

While Teixeira’s name recognition may give him an early advantage, Democratic strategists believe his Trump-aligned rhetoric could alienate moderate voters in the district, which stretches across Texas Hill Country and includes parts of San Antonio suburbs.

“This is another attempt to turn Texas into a MAGA playground,” said Maria Sanchez, a spokesperson for the Texas Democratic Party. “Voters deserve real solutions on jobs, education, and healthcare — not another celebrity candidate parroting Trump’s agenda.”

Recent polling shows that while the 21st district leans Republican, President Trump’s declining approval ratings in Texas could open the door for a strong Democratic challenger.

Teixeira joins a growing roster of high-profile athletes pivoting into Republican politics. Former NFL star Herschel Walker’s failed Senate run in Georgia and ex-coach Tommy Tuberville’s controversial Senate tenure have shown mixed results, but the MAGA movement has continued to recruit celebrity figures to boost turnout.

Teixeira’s connection to Trump’s allies runs deep. He’s volunteered with a conservative Austin think tank tied to policy architects behind several of the president’s second-term initiatives. And while he spent much of his post-Yankees life living in Greenwich, Connecticut — one of the wealthiest enclaves in America — Teixeira is now casting himself as a “faith-driven Texan fighting for working families.”

The primary field remains unsettled, but Teixeira’s announcement virtually guarantees national attention — and likely, national money — for the race. His district narrowly avoided redistricting upheaval under Gov. Greg Abbott’s controversial 2024 map, but shifting demographics and mounting Democratic pressure could make the contest far tighter than Republicans expect.

“This is going to be one to watch,” said political analyst Dr. Evan Roth at the University of Texas. “Teixeira has star power, but politics isn’t baseball. Democrats are betting voters in the Hill Country want solutions, not slogans.”
