The abrupt cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert has ignited a firestorm across Hollywood and Capitol Hill, as Democrats and media watchdogs accuse CBS of bowing to political pressure from President Donald Trump’s White House.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is now formally urging New York Attorney General Letitia James to launch a full-scale investigation into what it calls a “deeply troubling” and possibly illegal act of corporate censorship.
“This reeks of a payoff,” the WGA said in a blistering statement. “Pulling Colbert days after he called out Paramount for paying what he called a ‘big fat bribe’ to the Trump administration is more than suspicious—it’s dangerous.”
On July 2, CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, paid $16 million to settle a lawsuit with President Trump over 60 Minutes and CBS News. Less than two weeks later, Colbert used his July 15 monologue to rip the deal apart—accusing Paramount of essentially buying political favor from the Trump administration to push through a controversial $8 billion merger with Skydance Media, which is already under regulatory scrutiny in California.
Five days later, CBS pulled the plug on The Late Show—a move it claimed was “purely financial.”
But the timing has Democrats calling it what they believe it is: political retaliation.
“The idea that Colbert just happened to be canceled after criticizing a legal payout to Trump defies belief,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). “We need answers—fast.”
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA)—who ironically appeared as a guest on Colbert’s final week—joined the chorus, demanding transparency. “If Paramount and CBS axed The Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know,” Schiff said in a statement.
The Writers Guild went further, warning that the silencing of one of the last remaining mainstream late-night critics of Trump could have chilling implications.
“A democracy dies when corporations sell out speech to gain favor with authoritarian power,” the Guild wrote. “This wasn’t a cancellation. It was a message.”
President Trump wasted no time gloating. In a Truth Social post, he mocked Colbert and even hinted that ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel might be next. “Colbert is out—absolutely love that. Kimmel could be packing soon too,” Trump wrote.
Colbert, never one to shrink from a political fight, thanked his staff and fans in a Thursday statement and made it clear he plans to use every moment left on air—his contract ends in May 2026—to hold the Trump White House accountable.
“This show isn’t about me—it’s about speaking the truth when others are too afraid,” Colbert said. “And if they think they can shut that down, they don’t know our viewers.”
The controversy has reignited fears that corporate media—especially those with ties to regulatory-sensitive mergers—are growing increasingly vulnerable to political manipulation in Trump’s second term.
Attorney General Letitia James, no stranger to battling the Trump empire, has yet to confirm whether her office will investigate—but a senior aide told reporters that they are “closely monitoring developments.”
Meanwhile, Paramount and CBS maintain that The Late Show was simply too expensive. Insiders, however, say the program was a ratings powerhouse and a key late-night brand.
“This wasn’t about money,” said one former network executive. “This was about politics.”
Colbert may still have 10 months left on air—but the war over his silencing has already begun. And with Trump eyeing even tighter control over critical voices, Democrats say this is a test of whether freedom of speech still survives in American media

It’s all because of politics Trump wants to have eveery one adore him and not to tell the truth , awful disgusting He should be removed out and in prison where he belongs
Colbert discovered lying to and hating good decent Americans doesn’t sell very well these days! Only evil people/Democrats still buying it!
haven’t seen many “decent” americans on here buzz. and, colbert tells the truth!
Speaking of evil Democrats…
Very true comment.!!
He likely had that in the law suit if I win Colbert gets cancelled.
I don’t know who Steven Colbert is, don’t watch his show, never have. Maybe report news most people care about or find someone funny for the show . Sorry Hollywood is sad but no one really cares !
Why waste your time
This is disgusting. Our TV programming is now subject to Trump\’s disapproval & crazy whims? He is a convicted sexual predator, a convicted felon & fraudster. Yet gutless companies like CBS allow him to dictate what shows come & go based on his delicate ego & any perceived offense. Rebecca
Oh please! His ratings were down and he made less money for his employer! Thats the way it works!
And who cares if Hollywood erupts, they don’t speak for ordinary Americans and their lifestyles are so out of touch with the rest of us!
I’ll repeat what the Presdient of Brazil said (I think) Trump was elected President NOT EMPEROR. First CBS then ABC then NBC then all the rest then you and me and anyone that opposes Trump’s ways. Let him move to Russia and run against Putin. See what happens.
He’s a narcissistic man, he wants to be praised Al, the time and anyone who says anything g against him, he goes after them in any way he can. Suing, canceling shows, fire them, put them in jail with out due process. He’s and evil man!!!,
It’s obvious Colbert fans are in an uproar of his termination. Typical Hollywood fashion when their group is upset over a firing that is in the party – writers, producers, executive producers lose their income. Why would they turn to NY Attorney General to file charges? Because of the prior charges against Trump? Not to smart!! She is in trouble already in NY.
