President Donald Trump raised eyebrows Saturday night after making a puzzling comment about women during a softball interview hosted by his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, on her Fox News program My View with Lara Trump.
“You gave people opportunities that maybe they would never have taken themselves,” said the former fitness model turned GOP media fixture. “You’ve often seen things in people that they don’t even see in themselves.”
Trump, nodding, responded, “Especially women.”
Lara swooned: “You did it for me!”
Trump doubled down, adding vaguely, “A lotta women,” but stopped short of offering any examples.

Critics quickly pointed out the gap between the president’s statement and his actual record. Of the 16 members currently serving in his cabinet, only five are women. Among eight cabinet-level officials, just three are female, including his new White House Chief of Staff, longtime loyalist Susie Wiles, whose appointment followed a string of resignations and scandals that plagued the West Wing during Trump’s chaotic second term.
Trump’s recent remark comes as many women’s rights groups continue to accuse his administration of systematically dismantling gender equality initiatives and reproductive healthcare access.
“Trump claiming he uplifts women is like a wolf saying he protects sheep,” said NARAL spokesperson Jamie Ellison. “His record speaks for itself—and it’s hostile.”
The president’s murky legacy with women stretches back long before his political career. In 2016, the infamous Access Hollywood tape captured Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women. “I don’t even wait,” he said at the time. “And when you’re a star, they let you do it… Grab ‘em by the p—-.”
Despite repeated attempts to rebrand himself as a champion for women—often flanked by family members like Lara or daughter Ivanka—Trump continues to face skepticism among female voters. Recent polls show Trump trailing significantly among suburban women, a key demographic that helped sway the 2020 and 2022 elections for Democrats.
“He thinks putting a few loyal women in front of a camera makes him a feminist,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a post on X. “But his actions—on the Supreme Court, on birth control, on sexual harassment—paint a very different picture.”
With Roe v. Wade long overturned and Trump-appointed judges across the country helping to enforce restrictive abortion bans, women’s rights advocates say the president’s Saturday night comment was not just tone-deaf—it was insulting.
“Empowerment doesn’t mean putting women on camera,” Ellison said. “It means protecting their rights. And Trump’s failed at that—repeatedly.”
