A routine takeoff turned into a fiery catastrophe Sunday afternoon as a private plane burst into flames shortly after lifting off from London Southend Airport—triggering chaos on the ground and a full-scale emergency response.
Witnesses described a terrifying explosion as the aircraft crashed just seconds after departing for the Netherlands. “I saw the huge fireball from my window,” said local resident Dani Hill, who lives near the airfield. “I’m still shaking. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was terrifying.”

Emergency services rushed to the scene around 4 p.m. local time. According to Essex Police, the incident has been classified as a “serious crash,” and a major response effort is underway. Multiple fire engines, ambulances, police units, and an air ambulance were deployed within minutes.
Authorities evacuated nearby Rochford Hundred Golf Club and Westcliff Rugby Club out of precaution as thick black smoke billowed over the airport.
The downed aircraft has been identified as a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, a twin-turboprop typically used for business or medical flights. Flight data reportedly shows the plane barely made it off the runway before plummeting back to the ground. It had just departed Southend and was headed to the Netherlands.
Though exact numbers remain unclear, authorities have yet to confirm how many people were on board or whether there are fatalities.
Southend Airport released a brief statement confirming the disaster: “There has been a serious incident involving a general aviation aircraft. We are working closely with local authorities and emergency services. More details will be released as soon as possible.”
The East of England Ambulance Service said they dispatched a fleet of emergency teams, including four ambulances, a rapid response unit, four Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles, and senior medics.
Aviation authorities, along with local police and fire investigators, have cordoned off the site to determine the cause of the crash. Witnesses are being interviewed, and flight logs are being analyzed.
“It’s a miracle more people weren’t hurt,” said a first responder at the scene, who asked to remain anonymous. “Debris was scattered everywhere. The plane was engulfed in flames almost instantly.”
London Southend Airport, once hailed as a rising hub for private and regional flights, has faced controversy in recent years over safety upgrades and complaints about its aging infrastructure. Though the Beech B200 is a reliable model, questions are now swirling about its maintenance history and the pilot’s actions during the brief flight.
