Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of President Donald Trump and a key figure in MAGA world, is signaling that she may jump into the 2026 Senate race in North Carolina — a move that would deepen the Trump family’s entrenchment in American politics as Republicans scramble to retain control of a vulnerable seat.
During an appearance on Fox News Monday, the former RNC co-chair confirmed she’s “strongly considering” a bid to replace retiring GOP Senator Thom Tillis — a moderate who recently broke with the party over sweeping Medicaid cuts.
“This would be the third time I’ve considered running for Senate,” Trump told host Emily Compagno. “The timing hasn’t worked in the past. But I would love to do it.”
Cracks in the GOP — And an Opening for Lara?
Tillis announced Sunday he would not seek reelection in 2026, citing opposition to President Trump’s controversial “big, beautiful” budget bill, which includes massive reductions in Medicaid spending. His decision throws a key swing-state race wide open — and raises the stakes for both parties.
“I cannot support this bill in its current form,” Tillis said, warning that it could cost North Carolina “tens of billions” and force hundreds of thousands off Medicaid. He’s been increasingly isolated within his own party, advocating for bipartisanship in a political environment dominated by hardliners.
Now, Lara Trump — who has never held elected office — appears ready to step in.
“Born and Raised” in North Carolina — But Living at a Florida Golf Club
While she often emphasizes her Tar Heel roots, Lara Trump has spent the last few years living with husband Eric Trump and their two children at the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida. Before that, they were longtime residents of Manhattan.
“I was born and raised in North Carolina,” she said Monday. “It made me the person I am today.”
Despite the relocation, she insists she still feels tied to the state — and could be its next senator if the timing and “family needs” align.
A Trump Senate Seat?
Democrats see an opening. Though North Carolina backed Trump in 2024, the state remains politically divided — with a Democratic governor, a history of split-ticket voting, and voters who have grown wary of extremism.
Political analysts say a Lara Trump candidacy could energize Trump’s base — but also galvanize Democratic and independent voters wary of dynastic politics and far-right influence.
“She’d be running as a rubber stamp for her father-in-law’s radical agenda,” said longtime North Carolina political strategist James Belton. “That’s not a guaranteed win here.”
Progressive groups are already mobilizing. “We’re not going to let the Trump machine take over the Senate seat without a fight,” said Alicia O’Rourke, a spokesperson for Carolina Future, a Democratic-aligned PAC.
A Family on the Ballot — Again
Lara Trump has considered a Senate run twice before — once in 2021, when she backed current Senator Ted Budd instead, and again when Marco Rubio left the Senate to join President Trump’s cabinet as Secretary of State.
In 2024, she was tapped to co-lead the Republican National Committee, but stepped down after her father-in-law won re-election in November.
Now, she may be the Trump family’s next act.
“We’ve learned in this family how powerful it is to change lives through politics,” she said Monday. “And no one knows that better than my father-in-law.”
What’s Next
Senator Tillis’ term ends in January 2027. The race to replace him will be one of the most closely watched Senate battles of 2026.
Democrats are expected to begin floating names soon. For now, all eyes are on Lara Trump — and whether she decides to swap TV studios for the Senate floor.
One thing is clear: the Trump dynasty isn’t finished with Washington just yet.
